Living Fit Women’s Club and Clean, Green, Beautiful North Bay are pictured here thanks to @Living Fit Women’s Club and Clean Green Beautiful North Bay. Organiz...ation collaborated with the The City of North Bay, Trees for Nipissing, North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority, North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit, Eagle Tree And Landscaping Services to plant a ‘community orchard’ of 10 apple and 10 plum trees in Thomson Park. The apple varieties are Liberty and Freedom, and the plum varieties are Brookred, Grenville and Prunus Americana, all hardy to North America. Recently, the Living Fit members gathered at the orchard for a photo op, with Liz Lott Photography. It was also our opportunity to establish a connection to the trees we will be caring for. The trees were funded by Living Fit and NBPSDHU. The trees are expected to begin bearing fruit in three to five years. Harvesting will be open to everyone, and especially food programs in the city. We are aspiring to 4 more orchards to be planted at various locations within our City’s boundaries. From a CGB perspective, these trees meet all the criteria for improving our quality of life and the sustainability of our City: - By increasing the tree canopy of our City. - By producing food, locally, for community. - By providing beautiful spaces within community. - By offering opportunities for stewardship,. - By creating beauty, and offering a sense of belonging. - Where there is beauty, there is social connection, and less litter. Here are some comments by Living Fit members: The tree I chose is an apple tree and I named it Mac. McIntosh (Mac’s) are my favourite apples so hence, this is the name I chose. I bought a tree to support our Community orchard as I value the environment and the food the tree will provide. - Laurie Wood My grandson and I collaborated and came up with Mr. H Appely for my apple tree. I contributed because I think trees are beautiful and important for all of us. Janet Taylor Not sure what kind of tree I picked but I named it after my Mom, June. Doesn’t matter what kind it is, I love them all! - Gloria Decaire I named my tree Emma-Rose after my 2 granddaughters Emma and Rosalie Duquette. Bought the tree because I believe in beauty & the fact that this orchard will help to feed our community not only by providing food but on a spiritual level when we see the blossoms in the Spring and the fruit in the Fall. - Joan Clarke Submitted by Hariett Madigan - Clean, Green, Beautiful North Bay’s focus is to bring the beauty of the city’s waterfront and the culture of stewardship to the entire city. - Trees for Nipissing aims to create a more park-like, climate-change resilient environment in and around North Bay.
