CAN A HORSE REALLY HEAR YOUR HEARTBEAT? This one seems to be doing the rounds! So a few facts! A human heartbeat is mainly composed of frequencies below 50Hz.... People with good hearing can hear sounds in the range from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. A human heartbeat makes a sound of around -85dB. In ideal conditions (in a soundproof room with no echo) a person with good hearing may be able to hear a sound of 0 or 1dB. Horse hearing is between 50Hz to 33,500Hz with their best sensitivity between 1,000Hz and 16,000Hz (Heffner & Heffner, 1983; 1984; 1986). Horse hearing is often cited as 14Hz to 25,000Hz but this is a misquoting of the original paper by Odberg who tested horses between 14,000Hz and 25,000Hz (Odberg 1978) Horses may have more sensitive ears than us by around 10 to 20dB (Fletcher 1985). In summary, it seems highly unlikely that a horse can hear your heartbeat from 4 feet away. It also seems highly unlikely that horses can hear each other's heartbeats.
