In a new post on The Editors’ Weekly, disability rights advocate and writer Amanda Leduc shares her experience of being edited for her recent novel versus her previously published non-fiction book, talks about identity-first versus person-first language, and offers a sneak peek of her keynote at the 2021 Editors Canada Conference.

Bénévole en vedette : Anna Cairns Lorsqu'Anna Cairns s'est jointe à Réviseurs Canada en 2019, à titre d'étudiante affiliée, elle a misé sur le bénévolat au sein du comité des publications pour l'aider à peaufiner ses compétences. Mais elle s'est retrouvée prise à apprendre comment téléverser des livres numériques et à marchander par courriel pendant des semaines avec un éditeur de livres numériques au sujet d'un point-virgule. Ça s'est avéré une excellente leçon sur l'impor...tance de savoir dans quoi vous vous engagez lorsque vous acceptez une tâche bénévole , explique-t-elle, mais tout a fini par se régler. J'aime beaucoup le comité et le fait que je participe à la création de livres, peu importe l'aspect en cause. Anna aime les livres depuis sa tendre enfance, lorsqu'elle écrivait des histoires et des poèmes. Elle se considère d'abord comme une autrice et elle a publié une collection de micronouvelles intitulée Light in the Dark. Elle se considère également comme une perpétuelle étudiante. En 2020, elle a obtenu son certificat en édition du Collège George Brown et poursuit maintenant un certificat en rédaction à l'Université de Toronto de même qu'un diplôme en anglais de l'Université Queen's. Je travaille aussi dans le but de maitriser ma langue maternelle, qui est l'italien , ajoute-t-elle. Encore au tout début de sa carrière de pigiste, Anna aime bien les petits détails qui construisent le monde et qui font partie du travail de révision de fond d'ouvrages de fiction. En plus de tout cela, elle fait du bénévolat. Elle travaille non seulement auprès du comité des publications, elle a aussi révisé le Volunteer Handbook de Réviseurs Canada et rédigé des articles pour Voix active et BoldFace. Elle s'est aussi jointe au comité de formation et perfectionnement professionnel et anime des webinaires de Réviseurs Canada. Je parle beaucoup quand je me trouve en groupe, mais devant un public, je perds mes moyens , explique Anna. Animer des webinaires l'a aidée à surmonter son angoisse de performance. Dans ses temps libres, Anna aime faire du vitrail, communier avec la nature et conduire pour l'organisme Toronto Wildlife. Featured Volunteer: Anna Cairns When Anna Cairns joined Editors Canada in 2019 as a student affiliate, she figured volunteering for the publications committee would be a safe bet to build her editing skills. Instead, she found herself learning to upload e-books and haggling for weeks with an online publisher over the handling of a semicolon. "That was a great lesson in finding out what you'll be volunteering for before you volunteer," Anna says, "but it all turned out well. I... love the committee and enjoy being involved in the creation of books in any way." Anna's love for books dates back to her childhood, when she wrote stories and poetry. She still considers herself primarily a writer and has published a collection of flash fiction, Light in the Dark. She also considers herself a lifelong student. In 2020 she completed an Editorial Certificate through George Brown College and is now pursuing a Writing Certificate at the University of Toronto and a degree in English through Queen's University. "I'm also working on becoming fluent in my native Italian language," she adds. Just beginning her freelance career, Anna enjoys "the little details of world building" that go into the developmental editing of fiction. She also keeps busy with volunteering. In addition to serving on the publications committee, she has proofread the Editors Canada Volunteer Handbook and written for Active Voice and BoldFace. She also joined the training and development committee and now hosts Editors Canada webinars. "I'm very talkative in a group, but in front of an audience I freeze," Anna says. Being a webinar host has helped her overcome performance anxiety. In her spare time, Anna enjoys working with stained glass, getting out into nature and driving for Toronto Wildlife.
