: A Military Order Of The Loyal Legion Of The United States Membership Badge In Gold, C. 1900 The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), also known as the "LoyalLegion", is a United States patriotic order, organized on April 15, 1865, by officers of the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States who "had aided in maintaining the honor, integrity, and supremacy of the national movement" during the American Civil War. It was... formed by loyal union military officers in response to rumors from Washington of a conspiracy to destroy the Federal government by assassination of its leaders, in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. They stated their purpose as the cherishing of the memories and associations of the war waged in defense of the unity and indivisibility of the Republic; the strengthening of the ties of fraternal fellowship and sympathy formed by companionship in arms; the relief of the widows and children of dead companions of the order; and the advancement of the general welfare of the soldiers and sailors of the United States. As the original officers died off, the veterans organization became an all-male hereditary society. The modern organization is composed of male descendants of these officers (hereditary members), and others who share the ideals of the Order (associate members), who collectively are considered "Companions". A female auxiliary, Dames of the Loyal Legion of the United States (DOLLUS), was formed in 1899 and accepted as an affiliate in 1915. A Historically Important Order of the Garter of The First Duke of Wellington One of the most prominent figures of 19th century Europe, Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington was both a leading statesman and arguably one of the greatest strategic defensive commanders in military history. A master of tactical planning, his leadership resulted in unlikely victories where numerical superiority could not be secured. The 'Iron Duke' was the principal player on the British sta...ge of aristocracy, politics, and the Kingdoms' military ventures. Twice Prime Minister, Wellington was influential in policy creation and revision as a prominent Tory leader. That being said, his most reverberating historical impact was the famous total defeat of Napoleon's Grande Armée at Waterloo in 1815. For his service to his home Kingdom as well as the great nations of continental Europe, Wellington was the recipient of countless chivalric orders and decorations of the highest degree. Today, this astonishing collection of awards is housed and maintained at the now ancestral residence of the Duke of Wellington, Apsley House in London. Presented alongside thousands of priceless works of art and fine period furniture in a gilt Apsley interior, Wellington's awards feature first-class degrees of nearly all European orders. An impressive sight, the awards are presented to the public and are available for daily viewing. Absent from this collection, however, is a particular order personally gifted by Wellington to his loyal valet John Mugford. Bestowed upon the Duke in March of 1813 and subsequently passed down within the family of Mugford, eMedals is privileged to present the Duke of Wellington's Order of the Garter. The Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and French Third Republic against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies. More than three million men fought in the battle and one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the... deadliest battles in human history. Despite its commander’s positive assessment, the Battle of the Somme would remain one of the most controversial operations of World War I. In the war’s aftermath, British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, a nemesis of Haig’s, roundly condemned Haig’s offensive: Over 400,000 of our men fell in this bullheaded fight and the slaughter amongst our young officers was appallingHad it not been for the inexplicable stupidity of the Germans in provoking a quarrel with America and bringing that mighty people into the war against them just as they had succeeded in eliminating another powerful foeRussiathe Somme would not have saved us from the inextricable stalemate. Featured Item: A Imperial German Battle of the Somme Commemorative Cross (Weimarer Republik, Somme Kreuz), 1914-1918 This cross was created by the Ehrenbund der Champagnekämpfer veterans association in 1920 and was awarded to veterans who participated in either the Somme, Verdun, Argonne, Champagne battles, or on the Eastern Front. All were made by the same maker and were privately purchased by the veterans. They were banned by the Nazis in 1935. The displayed Cross in particular was instituted by the Honorary Union of the Saxon World War Participants, a Veterans' Association in Saxony. It was founded to commemorate and reward German soldiers who participated in the Battle of Somme. Photos and Info from @history and Wikipedia eMedals Notice:We respect history.
