Good morning Essential Gang, this morning I have an Essential Plumbing tip! Based on the weather outside, I'd like to take a moment to think about something you probably have not thought about in a while, or maybe you have been constantly worried about it ....Your sump pump:) Here's a few things to check a few times a year and perhaps before a large rainfall:... -Open the cover, look inside. Check for debris that might clog or jam in the impeller of the pump. -Lift the float to ensure it activates the pump, and the water level drops. Once the level drops, the pump should shut off. - Take a walk around outside make sure that the end of the pipe where the water exits the sump pump is open and water can flow. Sometimes theses can be partially covered in dirt or underground where they can freeze. The end of the pipe should see the light of day so that it remains open and free flowing. Another important item to look at, your downspouts. Ensure that water coming down from the roof can be evacuated away from the foundation, this should keep it out of your sump pit and out of your basement. Your sump pump is usually submerged in water so it might look a little rusty. That does not mean it needs replacing. It should run quiet and move water. Most times, when I'm called for a sump pump not working, it's caused by restricted flow due to a plugged or frozen discharge pipe. For those that like peace of mind, there are many products that can give you more comfort in knowing that your basement is safe. A battery backup sump pump that will run even if the power is out. These run on deep discharge batteries that can operate 8-12 hours. They are recharged by a wall outlet or generator. High water alarms that can send you a text if the water rises. This has been especially helpful for customers that travel. This way they can ask someone to check on their basement in the event of a high water alarm. This option is not as expensive as you would expect If you have a question about your sump pump or would like it checked over please don't hesitate to get in touch! Rob 506-227-1394
