ET Music Therapy / Meet In The Music Curriculum 08.01.2021

Received my Canadian Journal of Music Therapy today. So honoured to be asked to write a book review for Dr. Petra Kern and Marcia Humpal’s book: EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC AND AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER. This is an excellent resource for the beginning music therapist to the seasoned music therapist, looking to stay current in the field of autism! MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS: Emily Naccarato, Accredited Music Therapist, Senior Music Therapist at ET Music Therapy Q: Selection/song that really touches your heart/comforts you no matter how many times you listen to it:... A: There are different genres and different songs for different times in my life. Right now salsa music always gives me good energy. Q: Your favourite non music activity: A: My favourite thing to do is dance! Prior to Covid, I was taking bachata classes and socially dancing every week. If it has to be an activity that doesn’t involve music, then it's exploring new things: areas, or subjects. It could be hiking an unknown trail, walking in new neighbourhoods, or listening to podcasts. New information and environments always seem to inspire me. Q: Favourite food to cook: A: I also love cooking! Black beans and arepas (I love the new arepa emoji on iPhone) are a common go-to for me, although steak and kale salad is my favourite meal and homemade pizza is my favourite weekend food. Q: Something that you’d like to see yourself doing in five years that you don’t know how to do now: A: In five years, I hope to have better learnt Spanish, with some time in Latin speaking countries under my belt. Q: Someone you look up to and why: A. I am lucky to have many strong, authentic, hardworking, and beautiful women in my life to look up to: 1) my mother Donna Naccarato who is smart, and brave; 2) my mentor Esther Thane who is powerful and inventive; 3) and my Buddhist friend Sue Dubois, who has the strongest intuition out of anyone I know and who has shown me a connection to the Devine. (This is not all but when the question asks for one than I better not say more than three.) Q: Bucket list vacation destination: A: My travel bucket list is extensive and includes countries in South America, Europe, and South East Asia. My dream wedding destination is an island in the gulf of Naples called Ischia, to honour my Italian roots in what I find to be the most romantic place in the world. Italy is also the country with the most UNESCO heritage sites. #staffthatrocks #musictherapy Pacific Autism Family Network SelfDesign Global CKNW Kids' Fund Traditional Learning Academy Online Music Heals Canada Music Therapy Association of British Columbia Emily Nacc Bikers For Autism

MEET THE TEAM MONDAYS: Jacqueline Cheung, Music Therapy Intern Q: Music that touches your heart & comforts you, no matter how many times you listen to it:... A: June: Barcarolle from Tchaikovsky's The Seasons is a piece of music that brings me to a mysterious place where the warm ocean breeze feels like a blanket that hugs me tight. I can listen to this piece at any time of the day and it will bring me comfort. Q: Favorite non music activity: A: When I am not making music, I am watching cat videos with my cat. Q: Favorite food to cook: A: Rice has always been one of my favourite things to eat because it reminds me of home, and so my favourite dish to cook is fried rice. Q: Something you'd like to see yourself doing in 5 years that you don't know how to do now: A: I have always been drawn to the warm sound of the cello, and in five years time, I hope to know how to play this beautiful instrument. Q: Person you look up to most and why: A: The person that I look up to is my mom. She is a strong woman who raised two children in a foreign country without having her own family and friends by her side. My mom has not seen her family in over 30 years and often feels homesick but she has never once complained. She has taught me how to be independent and shown me what selflessness looks like. Q: Bucket list vacation destination: A: I am half Chinese and half Thai, but I never felt connected to my Thai roots. I would love to travel to Thailand to explore the country that my mom grew up in and to learn more about the culture and history. When you have a client who is now able to share his musical ideas and collaborate with others, you wanna jump for joy!!! Here, this client took a pre-existing favorite song, wrote out the chords and lyrics, and re-created it with his music therapist, Emily, and our music therapy intern Jacqueline. Through writing, practicing and recording entire songs, our client is developing attention and executive functioning. #ourclientsinspireus Emily Nacc Jacqueline Cheung

116 Music Therapists all over the world came together and shared their healing musical message "You are not alone", a musical adaptation of "You Will Be Found" from Dear Evan Hansen. (Esther Thane & Nate Ky had the priviledge of participating. See if you can find them!). We as Music therapists use the power of music daily to connect, heal and transform lives and relationships and wanted to share our healing musical gifts with you. We are in the midst of very challenging times in our world and many are experiencing depression, confusion, frustration, anxiety, fear, loneliness and so much more.
