The recent shootings of Asian women (along with two others) in Atlanta has once again brought attention to the devasting impact of hate and discrimination. Racist attacks against Asians have been an ongoing problem but it has become much worse during the pandemic. A CTV article reveals that rates of hate crimes directed at Asians have increased by as much as 700% in the past year. These statistics are very disturbing. We want our Asian colleagues and the Asian families we work with to know that we will speak up against racism and discrimination. We will support them when they are attacked or discriminated against and are committed to working against all incidents of hate, racism and discrimination. Karen Spencer Executive Director

Family and Children’s Services of the Waterloo Region wishes Happy Diwali to our Hindu community members. We acknowledge Diwali as a festival of lights which c...arries the ancient cultural and spiritual wisdom of victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. We recognize that this spiritual message of the Diwali festival aligns metaphorically with our anti-oppressive framework as we attempt to address the internalized and external oppression and injustices by creating a nourishing community for our collective wellbeing. We acknowledge that the festivities of Diwali coincide with the celebration of the Liberation of Mahavir for the Jain community, Bandi Chor Divas for the Sikh community and celebration of Goddess Kali for the Newar Bhuddist community.
