Fair Haven Retreat Bed and Breakfast 25.04.2021

For folks new to the group. This is a hobby page that got wayyyyyy out of hand. I realized that the department of tourism page was only posting icebergs from th...e main tourist hubs for a variety of reasons (old tech, marketing targets, labour intensive protocols, etc.) and realized I was missing chances to see bergs. First I tried very hard to report to them and help them to send folks to places like Lumsden and Nicky's Nose but they were not ready for my info or enthusiasm. So I experimented with this fb group and a blog beginning in 2014. The blog was no good because I needed to update it and that was labour intensive. This group on the other hand took off famously by word of mouth and here we are. I had around 800 members by the end of the first summer and wondered how I'd entertain them in the winter. No worries. Many photographers continued to join and share past photos in the off season. A new phenomon happened around 2018 or 2019 when I realized there were many people simply following the page without joining. I'd get member requests and immediately the new member might post pictures taken that day or the day before as a way to thank the group for helping them with reliable information. In the off season (now) we post past photos and iceberg related are and information. I use the banner page to indicate whether we are in season or not. Once the icebergs are plentiful enough, I declare only current icebergs with locations to avoid confusion for those wanting to go for a drive to see them. Last year, due to COVID, it was hard to know what to do. Safe drives in your household bubble were actually recommended by public health but (mostly fake) rumors of 'strangers from away' lead to panic and complaints. I archived the page. Experimented with posting bergs a week late to avoid sending folks places and finally things settled and we even had an Atlantic Bubble where some from neighbouring provinces could come and visit with rules in place. This year? Who knows. As I write, Feb 20, 2021 NL is in it's largest outbreak with community spread. We are now 13 days from spreader events and 12 days away from knowing about community spread and 8 days from learning this is the B117 variant so more infections and of greater concern. We're back to one house bubbles, where we were this time last year. Knowing now that the reports of strangers were exaggerations and responses to fear, not fact, the page should function as 'normal' this year. My Newfoundland and Labrador residents will gladly share and document the season in the absence of tourists and visitors and yes, we know how lucky we are. To those away, wishing they could come, you have another year to save and plan and take notes. It will be worth it when you come. A few rules. We do not allow posts of dangerous or potentially dangerous behaviors around icebergs. They are dangerous and unstable at all time and anyone telling you different is putting you in danger. Sometimes, the use of a zoom lense compresses an image and may give the impression of a closeness that is not accurate. When I doubt, I delete but posts here by regular posters represent safe distances from icebergs. I get a lot of spammy requests to join. Someone from a tropical place with 1 facebook friend and 456 groups who only joined fb a week ago does not get in. It takes a lot of time to keep the group safe. IF A POST GOES UP THAT IS NO APPROPRIATE, REPORT TO ADMINISTRATION. That's me. I'll delete as soon as possible and assess to see if a block is needed. As much as I love you all, I've learned this is a collection of profiles and I have no problem dropping one to keep the rest safe and welcoming. Please DO NOT invite ALL your friends. If you have 4 friends who might be coming to NL some day, go for it but every invite is time taken out of my day. I'm not worried about building group size and I want folks who are interested, even if they can't post due to their misfortune of not being NLers. Be kind. Share by using the share button to give credit to those who took these pictures. Some are professional. Some are amateur. All are worthy of credit for their time and talent. We do not use photoshop here. Accusations of such (even joking) are not taken kindly. We don't need to. We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world and can confidently say our icebergs are probably better than your icebergs ;) Be safe. With Covid and on Facebook. Do not spam our page. When we go current, the cover page changes and will indicate so. All posts then must have the name of the location and if you can reference the next largest town, that helps tourists with their planning. Please also include the date written in the post as that allows us to search later. Example "Ragged Cove near Twillingate, June 15, 2021" I can search by Twillgate and find this post, Twillingate 2021, June 2021, etc. I'm a retired teacher and have the rules for the safety and comfort of all. Welcome. Here's a past blog post from March 2016 of the time I met Eric Abbot and proof that our traveling days didn't start with being a character in Come from Away. This was an early berg that year and stayed from Jan to April. An anomaly.

Time to make the hard decision. By this time in the past few years I would have been host to 350+. This year = 12. I’ve thought it out. Weighed the balance, and... decided it is time for a positive change. I can’t justify ‘hanging in there’ when I realise that the local and international travellers who came, and loved it here, will not be able to come to our slice of paradise for a while. They will come when the travel restrictions lift, I’m certain of it, but the arthritis in my spine is making sure I make room for someone else to take my place in this beautiful spot and be ready to welcome the visitors, as I have done, for the past 10 years. I am telling you all this now, so if you know someone who would love to live here, my house, and business are going to be listed ‘on the market’ in the next few days. See more
