Many of my patients have asked me if direct smill is ok and I want to give you what professor John Mew think. Here we go. It worth the time you put in it and read it. Orthodontics, Orthotropics, Invisalign or Smile Direct, how do we choose?... The recent arrival of ‘Smile Direct’, calls for a re-assessment, as many patients are confused and clinicians upset. How do we choose between them? Orthodontics gets excellent alignment but needs retaining for a life-time and is accused by some of retruding faces and increasing TMD and OSA. Orthotropics takes longer and does not always achieve such good alignment but often provides facial improvement and the teeth usually stay straight. invisalign achieves simple alignment for a reduced cost but also tends to relapse and has difficulty in controlling yaw, pitch and roll which sometimes create big problems. Smile Direct is less expensive and involves little professional supervision but has similar problems as Invisalign and has been beset with legal accusations. Invisalign income has increased hugely in the last two years and now threatens a large number of orthodontic practices and many young orthodontists face financial ruin with large debts. I don’t think these new introductions will threaten Orthotropics as neither Invisaline nor Smile Direct can offer facial improvement or long-term stability. In fact I think many orthodontists will see the advantage of switching to orthotropics. In the end everyone has to decide for themselves but short-term cost cutting is often followed by long-term regret. I am happy to teach Orthotropics to any colleagues in any country free of charge if my expenses are paid. Prof John Mew.
