Alongside sailors, airmen, and soldiers, Newfoundland and Labrador sent some 3,600 loggers overseas during the Second World War. These volunteers formed the New...foundland Overseas Forestry Unit (NOFU) and helped supply timber products critical to British coal mining operations. By the end of 1940, some 30 logging camps had been established in about 25 forests in Scotland and England. Here are a few pics of my Uncle Tine O'Keefe and cousins Tom O'Keefe and William Sesk who were part of this unit. They served in the Overseas Forestry Unit in Scotland alongside many other great hereos from places like Ferryland, Aquaforte, Calvert, Cape Broyle as well as the whole Southern Shore. So many brave men from so many places throughout our province were part of this unit. I have been working on a research project on the NOFU. Thank you to Jenny Higgins for her research article on The NOFU where some of my info was gathered. Some of the brave men from Ferryland who volunteered and were selected for the Forestry Unit include; Albert Williams, Tommy Costello, Joseph Costello,Thomas Costello, Wilfred Costello, Henry Barnable, Matt Barnable, John Barnable, Ron Barnable, John Brien, Cecil Ryan, John Ryan, Michael Ryan, Thomas Ryan, Patrick Ryan, William Sesk, Daniel Clowe, Edward Clowe, Albert Harvery, Ned Healey, Alden Hynes, Clarence Hynes, Howard Hynes, Ed Jordan, William Jordan, Valentine Keefe, Tom Keough, Peter Kavanagh, John Kinsella, John Morrisey, John Morry, Leo C O'Keefe, Thomas O'Keefe, William Sweeney, Fredick Walsh, Henry Walsh, Ernest Walsh, Allan Walsh, Thomas Walsh, James H Walsh, James Walsh, Lawrence White. As Remembrance day approaches, let's remember all those who have served or are serving. Thank you for your service. Lest we forget.
