A recent Ontario case makes a much welcome statement that the use of demeaning racial or ethnic slurs is very serious misconduct similar to theft, assault, and deliberate sabotage. Employers must still engage in an analysis of the relevant factors when disciplining or terminating employees, but this case is an important signal that racist attitudes and demeaning language cannot be minimized or tolerated in the workplace.
