via Leadnow.ca An explosive report has revealed that the Trudeau government formed a secret working group with Canada’s most powerful oil lobbyists during the pandemic. As part of these meetings, the oil lobby has been pushing the federal government to hit pause on climate action, cut environmental regulations, and support destructive tar sands projects. Here’s the thing. One week today, Prime Minister Trudeau will participate in a global climate summit hosted by U.S. Preside...nt Biden. World leaders are expected to unveil their plans to cut emissions and tackle the climate emergency. We know that Trudeau’s planning to announce a new climate target, in an attempt to secure his image as a global climate leader. But with the fossil fuel industry’s pressure, and reports of secretive meetings with oil lobbyists, we’re concerned that Trudeau’s climate commitments won’t go far enough. If thousands of us sign an emergency petition to show Trudeau that his reputation is on the line, and urge him to meet the scale of the climate crisis with ambitious climate targets and a plan to meet them we could help drown out the oil lobby. But the climate summit starts in one week so we need this campaign to go viral, fast. Will you sign and share the petition now?

SURPRISE, SURPRISE! "The pipeline was shut down within an hour of the spill at Trans Mountain's control centre in Edmonton, but the report says it took another four hours to find and manually close valves to the tube, spilling oil into a culvert, the water table and a neighbouring agricultural field. ... the safety board report says a "multi-year remediation plan'' will be needed to recover contaminants in the area surrounding the pump station." ... https://www.cbc.ca//failed-fitting-causes-190-000-litre-tr

"Among Canada’s Big Five banks, RBC is the worst climate offender. RBC is the fifth largest funder of fossil fuel projects (and the No. 1 funder of tar sands oil) in the world, having poured US$160 billion into fossil fuel financing since the Paris climate agreement was signed in 2016. RBC’s ties to extraction, the tar sands and climate destruction are hard to square with CEO David McKay’s claim in the company’s Climate Blueprint report that climate change is one of the mos...t pressing issues of our age. As a college student set to graduate this year, I’m trying to figure this out: How should I interpret a statement like this coming from a man who, according to the most recent proxy circular, made more than $12 million in 2020 leading a business that bankrolls hundreds of billions worth of climate-killing fossil fuel projects?"

According to Daniel Tetrault, president of the Burnaby Teachers’ Association, whose members teach at public schools that are threatened by the tank farm expansion, The safety of our members, of students and of school staff is threatened by this project. We are not reassured that this tank farm can be operated without unacceptable dangers to all of them. Tetrault may be right. In December of 1982, for example, the Tacoa fire in Venezuela burned for three days, killing more than 150 people. Significantly, the facility was built on a steep slope that made fighting the fire more difficult, just as Chief Bowcock predicts will be the case in a tank farm fire on Burnaby Mountain.

"May, Williams was laid off, along with most of the Bakken workforce, when boom went bust. But within a week, he made a huge career leap 300 feet up, to be exact ascending from the firm grounds of the Bakken Oil Fields to the top of a giant wind turbine to take part in a 12-week training course to become a wind energy technician. In his words, he no longer wanted to "ride the oil waves, the highs and lows," anymore."
