In our current cultural moment, Christianity has been displaced from its favoured status by a secular world view. This has been a cause of lament for some and rejoicing for others, but in truth there is warrant for both responses. While we mourn the loss of Christian cultural excellence, the distinction between genuine and nominal Christianity has become clearer than ever before and this is surely a reason for gratitude. When Connie and her husband first got married, they faced some challenges and a friend recommended Focus on the Family. Later, she grew more familiar with the ministry through her church as they offered Focus resources. After having children, Connie and her husband became missionaries and moved overseas, where they were once again supported by articles and programming from Focus on the Family. As the years passed and Connie experienced significant stress at work, she knew she needed to talk to someone, but wanted someone she could trust, leading her back to Focus. During Advent, it’s traditional for Christians to prepare our hearts and minds to celebrate the birth of our Saviour. But historically, this celebration encompassed far more from the manger to the cross to the heavenly throne, from Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem to his return at the end of time. In keeping with that older, broader conception of Advent, here are a few related themes drawn from the beginning and end of all four Gospels, to parallel the four weeks of the season. In recent months, Murray noticed a drop in the volume of mail as ministries like Focus on the Family Canada sought to steward their resources and finances during the pandemic. To that end, Focus began offering the Focus on the Family magazine in digital format. As much as Murray loves physical print, he saw this as a new opportunity to minister to others. I wouldn’t have been able to forward [the magazine] on to people I thought those articles might have been of interest to if it had been on paper. Click through to read more of his story.

There’s an old adage that says we can see everything clearly by the light of the sun, but if we try looking right at it, we’ll go blind. History is the same. We can study the past, appreciate its triumphs and learn from its mistakes. However, if we turn within ourselves and try to judge our own place in history, it’s inevitable that our perception will be distorted and our conclusions incorrect. Click through to learn how we often misunderstand history, the risk of historical arrogance, and how we should be perceiving the past, the present and the future.
