The mobile chicken house gets moved to fresh pasture almost every day. From the side shot you can see the larger enclosure made up of electric net fencing where the chickens can roam and graze, while the feed and water move with the tent. . . . It's a pretty awesome system that #farmersteve came up with, using an electric drill to run the auger that replenishes feed so there is always some #certifiedorganic grain in addition to our #certifiedorganic pasture for the chickens t...o eat. . . . Some people call their mobile chicken houses "chicken tractors," but usually it's a structure built on a trailer, or a smaller frame on wheels of some kind. It's good for us as a family to spend time off the farm when we can, and even though chicken processing starts up this week and there is a new freezer under construction on the farm and it's #homesteaderboxweek , or maybe because of all of those things, we took a Sunday off the farm and... visited another farm. . . . Where Annelise grew up, and where her mom, and brother, and sister-in-law still farm, and where her grandpa used to live and farm as well. ... . . . Grandpa Henry planted the apple tree in full and amazing bloom behind us in this photo. It has two varieties grafted onto it; one is spartan-like, and one is a kind of gnarly apple-sauce variety (grandpa was Danish). Born in 1904 in Denmark he moved to Canada and worked on ranches in Manitoba, cut railroad ties up Seymour Arm, and joined the Canadian Army in world war two. He purchased this farmland in Chase along Veterans Land Act Rd with a veterans loan, and grew sweet corn and potatoes starting in the 1940s. . . . The farm was sold outside the family when Henry retired, and purchased back by Annelise's parents in the early 1980s, but Grandpa Henry's four acres, including this apple tree, was where he lived and died, and where Annelise's parents built a house and started farming more mixed field crops, adding back some 24 acres of the land that had been sold. They dabbled in everything from pigs, to peas, and pumpkins, to cucumbers, and raspberries, but always growing lots of strawberries and sweet corn. . . .
