Meet CRYSTAL LEWIS-WILTON: One of the many "Faces of Social Recovery" that aided in wildfire recovery in our region. As the Executive Director with Habitat for Humanity Wood Buffalo, Crystal developed the Wildfire Recovery Program- designed to help uninsured and underinsured homeowners rebuild and/or repair their homes lost or damaged in the wildfire. Crystal was also the Chair for the recovery working group NSUUR (NGO's Supporting Uninsured and Underinsured Residents) estab...lished to support homeowners affected by the wildfire along their recovery journey. NSUUR connected residents with local resources and organizations to help them with the various aspects of their recovery. #ymm #rmwb #SocialRecovery #FortMcmurrayStrong #ThankYou Special thanks to Suncor and MacDonald Island for their support in acknowledgement of the social profit sector.

Meet PETER FORTNA: One of the many "Faces of Social Recovery" that aided in wildfire recovery in our region. After the fire, Peter found himself displaced in Edmonton, unsure how he would ever pick up the pieces of his life. Soon he sought out a way to serve and help the communities that had given him so much over the years. He volunteered with the McMurray Métis, as that organization attempted to meet the diverse needs of its displaced members. This experience helped Peter ...to realize how the fire affected vulnerable citizens differently than most, and spurred conversations with Indigenous communities throughout the region. Ultimately, and with the support of the Canadian Red Cross, himself and his business partner were offered the opportunity to help Indigenous communities and governments to understand the fire’s impacts, and to develop programs to both assist with recovery and to better prepare for future natural disasters. #ymm #rmwb #SocialRecovery #FortMcmurrayStrong #ThankYou Special thanks to Suncor and MacDonald Island for their support in acknowledgement of the social profit sector.

Meet MITCH STEVES: One of the many "Faces of Social Recovery" that aided in wildfire recovery in our region. On the day of the mass evacuation, Mitch celebrated a different kind of 13th birthday that included a harrowing escape, followed by the fear and uncertainty of the well-being of friends, family members and neighbours. Watching his beloved Fort McMurray in flames and the ensuing outpouring of human kindness and support from around the country, Mitch became inspired and ...determined to help his fellow community members upon return. Knowing he had to do something to ease the pain of re-entry, Mitch decided to purchase a lawnmower and a weed wacker with his own savings. He then spent the rest of the summer mowing the lawns of all the neighbours for free so they’d come home to a wonderful surprise. Although Mitch felt his service was small in comparison to the bravery of the firemen and recovery crews, he soon came to realize his deeds were greatly appreciated, lifting the darkness for so many people. He brought smiles and laughter to our community along with selfless service and support. #ymm #rmwb #SocialRecovery #FortMcmurrayStrong #ThankYou Special thanks to Suncor and MacDonald Island for their support in acknowledgement of the social profit sector.
