I wanted to share some more Incredible news as former Futuro 2001 player Moses Kafeero has been invited to Uganda U20 National Team Camp in preperation for the u20 African Cup in Mauritania. Moses is an original Futuro player who was part of our inaugural team in 2011 and graduated from the academy in August 2020 before starting his varsity career at Guelph University where he earned Rookie of the Year honours in the OUA (Ontario University Athletics). Many of our present pl...ayers will have had the opportunity over the years to play with and against Moses in training and matches will be able to validate that Moses was always a hard working, respectful player who just stuck to doing his work on the field. Moses is obviously a huge inspiration for our academy players and again makes me proud to know that the academy philosophy of developing highly technical players where the focus is on the individual is starting to pay dividends for our senior players.

Congratulations to Futuro 2003 player Zoe Gardiner for signing with one of the most prestigious universities in the world McGill, in Montreal, Quebec. After a w...onderful adventure of exploring many different schools across Ontario and Quebec Zoe made an excellent decision in selecting #31 world wide ranking McGill. Coach Jose-Luis Valdes expressed interest in Zoe’s ability to run at players with exceptional pace and skill and made a concerted effort to get her signature. Zoe started attending the Parmar Sports Training Ball Mastery Program when she was 8 years old and continued to participate in summer camps before joining Futuro full time. Her interest in learning new ball manipulation tricks was always very obvious as she would come up to me to show me her new trick every session. I always thought it was interesting to see how excited she was by every move as it became her infatuation to try the new technique in 1v1 situations. The best part of her exploration was that she never got discouraged with wiping out and falling to her face. She would just get up and do the same thing over again and continues to have the same mindset as she comes to the end of her high-school career. This mentality of hers as allowed her to become a very good 1v1 player on the wing, combined with her top class sprinting ability. Not only has she excelled in running on the field, she has been amongst the top distance runners in Ontario High Schools the past few years. Her commitment to physical improvement and nutritional discipline has been a huge part of her success. Over the years, Zoe has always sought extra training opportunities over the years and is an example of filling your cup to the brim of your potential. The process of developing her technical standard was not glamorous. To be frank, it would have been impossible for anyone to look at Zoe at 13/14 years old and think that she would become a very good player at 17 years of age. We often talk about decision making in players being poor, however, we don’t give enough time for players to become comfortable with the ball. Zoe’s time with the ball over the years has become the reason why she has been invited to join one of the top Women’s soccer programs in Canada. Jed Davies had the following to say, Zoe Gardiner is the type of player who sticks at something until she can do it ten times in a row without an ounce of imperfection. Quick, great in one vs one situations, can score from outside the box with both feet -- all of that anyone can see when watching her. What you’ll not have seen are the hundreds of hours on repeat on her own developing her player identity, getting quicker, getting better in her one vs one, making sure she can go both ways, adding new skills to her locker of ideas and being able to finish off both feet. I’ve been lucky enough to see a few of those extra hours in the last few years, but Zoe’s development is owed to her own individual investment, taking her bag of balls to the field and just staying there for an hour or two. That is the one thing I’d love for young players at Futuro to take away from Zoe’s story - the power of finding joy in struggling for an hour every day. In 2019, Zoe had the opportunity to travel to England with the Futuro 2003/04 girls team on our England Premier League Tour. Zoe showed signs of the player she was becoming as she tormented fullbacks from world class clubs like Liverpool FC, Manchester United, Everton, Charlton Athletic and York. At Futuro we have always understood that the day to day process of enjoying the moment is the most important. Our slogan, Every Day in Every Way symbolizes this, however, the 10 days that will stand out the most in Zoes journey at Futuro will be the life changing experience that she had in November 2018 on our trip to India. Zoe along with 6 of her teammates had the opportunity of a life time to participate in the Global Generation Amazing Girls Lead Girls Play Festival https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GFQTe-f7lU. The seven girls raised close to $7500 by themselves in the local Ottawa community to create a brand new girls sports for development program in a remote village in Punjab, India. During the 10 days in India, Zoe and the girls participated in multiple workshops on female issues around thee world both in sports and off the field. The experience was something that none of the girls could ever prepare for going into the event and never forget leaving the event as their minds were exposed to the brutal realities of what females experience on and off the field on a daily basis. Zoes experience in India was the first, but surely won’t be the last in her attempt to better the lives of female athletes around the globe. Zoe will always be a part of the FUTURO FAMILY! Futuro Top 10 Stories of 2020 There have been so many great stories of individual successes over the year, but I wanted to start with an incredible one month that all of our Under 9 - 13 players participated in from April 20 - May 31. During the Covid-19 Lockdown, Futuro hosted the Outplaying World Cup League where daily matches between players in their own age group where played. Each player had the opportunity to play everyone in their age group by submitting their 20 second video. Voting took place daily on Futuro's Instagram page at: https://www.instagram.com/futurosoccer/. Enjoy the compilation from the various games during the month. Unfortunately, my phone got damaged and I lost almost all of the videos that were submitted over the month, so the compilation doesn't include everyone.
