Russell Chamberlin ~ "...Beefing up the soil Ranchers join climate-change research BY JODI HELMER At Chamberlin Ranch, Russell Chamberlin and Mary Heyden increased cattle stocking rates 35% by making one simple change: rotational grazing. ... It’s a different way of managing the cattle to improve the landscape, Chamberlin said. Where cattle can be used in a detrimental way overgrazing, bare soil, soil erosion we’re using them in such a fashion to grow more forage and to keep the soil covered, and it's been tremendous for us. Chamberlin and Heyden, cousins and third-generation Santa Barbara County ranchers, adopted rotational grazing as part of a farm carbon plan. The 2015 document outlines practices that could build up organic matter in the soil, sequestering carbon and improving soil health. Known as carbon farming, it is gaining traction with U.S. growers. In general, practices that disturb the soil surface, such as tilling and leaving fields fallow, impair carbon storage. Adopting no-till strategies, along with planting seasonal cover crops and adding compost or other carbon-rich amendments, can boost the amount of carbon in the soil, according to Geetika Joshi, senior environmental scientist with the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Removing carbon from the atmosphere and sequestering it in the soil has been hailed as an essential practice for combating climate change. These efforts are especially important on the Central Coast where things are heating up. Ventura County is considered the fastest warming county in the continental United States with an average temperature increase of 4.68 degrees Fahrenheit since 1895, according to The Washington Post. Santa Barbara County is not far behind, reporting an average temperature increase of 4.14 degrees Fahrenheit during the same time period. See more

Trees filter out carbon dioxide and toxins from the air and they pump oxygen into it. Forests don’t just live on the planet with us, they make it liveable for e...veryone (us included). Today on #InternationalDayofForests join @canopyplanet in thanking forests for all they do and let’s commit to protect these life-giving ecosystems. EMERGENCY WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM Supplies Needed: Plastic bottle or comparable food-safe container Another container for clean water... Clean cotton or cheese cloth Coffee filter or porous cloth Charcoal Sand (fine and coarse) Gravel or pebbles Step 1 - Cut Bottom Off Use scissors or a knife to cut off the bottom part of the bottle you will be putting the filter material in. Step 2 - Cut Drain Hole Use scissors or a knife to poke a small hole in the cap. If there is no cap, cut off top of the bottle instead of the bottom for previous step then poke several small holes in the bottom of the bottle. Step 3 - 1st Layer: Straining Fabric Stuff the bottom of bottle with a fine cloth or paper fabric, such as a coffee filter, cheese cloth or cotton stuffing. Sand and grass can also be used in this first stage. Fill the bottom with about 3 inches of grass clippings to filter out larger particulates and help give water a clean taste from chlorophyll contained in the grass. Then fill with 3-4 inches of very fine sand. Be careful not to use poisonous or unidentified weeds when collect grass clippings. Do not use Highway Department sand, as it can be full of road salt and chemicals. #emergencywater #thesolutionsaresimple #survival
