It with deep sadness that we let you know that Nira Nugroho, owner of Gingergrass passed away unexpectedly this past Friday, October 23. This has come as a shock to her family, friends and colleagues. Nira is survived by her son, two brothers, her sister, and many nieces and nephews. Nira came to Canada 35 years ago with the intention of building a better life for herself and her family. Although she could not speak a word of English, and only had a suitcase of clothes, sh...e achieved her goal. Her tenacity and resilience in the face of adversity was truly admirable. Nira's kindness was tremendous. In addition to quietly giving back to her community in Canada, she planned to open a school in Thailand for the less-fortunate children of her home country. Her enduring warmth influenced many lives for the better. Nira lived a wonderful and fulfilling life. Her unbreakable determination and boundless optimism brought her from the slums of Bangkok to the forefront of Atlantic Canada's restaurant industry. Sue Bailey of allNewfoundlandLabrador wrote that "[Nira's restaurant] is a testament to her long journey from a childhood in poverty." Nira has worked very hard to bring the tastes of her home country to St. John’s and to customers at her previous location in Nova Scotia. The restaurant has many loyal fans in both provinces. For this reason, and in memory of Nira, the staff has made the decision to work together to keep Gingergrass open. Operations will resume again today, Tuesday, October 27th. Nira’s presence will be greatly missed by all who have met her.
