The Arctic Apple Neal Carter is a bioresource engineer. A big chunk of his carrier has been spent building farms and working on farming projects all over the world. In mid 90’s Neal and his wife Louise got a farm on their own where they’ve started growing apples and cherries. They noticed that apple consumption went on a decline, as the strong browning reaction hindered it’s participation in the fresh-cut produce business. This has inspired Neal to improve the apple by using ...a biotechnology. He managed to silenced the Enzyme in an apple, that drives the browning reaction, by reinserting apple’s own gene back into the plant. The Enzyme is no longer produced and at the same time this mechanism allowed for all the good things in an apple (polyphenols, antioxidants, vitamin C) to live longer, as it doesn’t break down into the brown pigment. The Arctic Apple is the first genetically engineered apple which was created for benefits of both farmers and consumers. See more

New video from Patrick - Food + Science "Dr. Patrick Moore is a doctor and scientist that co-founded Greenpeace in Vancouver, BC. In this exclusive interview, he discusses how genetic modification started and why, even humans, are genetically modified. Dr. Moore says that what we call ‘GMO’, is only one kind of genetic modification and rather, it should be called something more specific such as recombinant DNA or horizontal gene transfer technology."
