In celebration of Mother’s Day coming up, we would like to highlight a few mothers who lived at Government House. While Henriette Forget and her husband Amédée did not have any children, her niece Rita from Montreal would visit the vice-regal couple. Dorothy Lake and her husband, Sir Richard Lake, raised four children at Government House, including their youngest who was born while Sir Richard Lake was in office in September 1918.... Many other vice-regal couples had children already grown and out of house. For example, when His Honour and Mrs. McNab celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on April 20, 1941, while living at Government House, two of their six children were able to attend the large, surprise party for the happy couple. The pair had a soft spot for children; the Leader-Post reported that half a dozen [children] were having a game of ball in the driveway while the golden wedding day guests came and went. This hasn't been the first pandemic that Government House has seen. The Spanish Flu of 1919 affected many Canadians and those around the world. Government House's Programming Assistant, Joanna Munholland, takes you through a comparison of the pandemics and the actions taken to stop the spread.
Cellarette A cellarette is a small furniture cabinet which was available in various sizes, shapes, and designs. It was used to store bottles of alcoholic beverages such as wine or whiskey. These containers appeared in Europe as early as the fifteenth century. They were found in pubs, taverns, and homes of the wealthy. This cellarette was kept in the Billiard Room and was kept full of spirits and glasses for the men in the room. A twin cabinet was in the dining room with fine... wines and sherries. The Billiard Room cabinet was sold to the Champ hotel while its twin was sold to the Queens Hotel. Both cabinets were reunited at Government House in 1982. Imagine the many conversations and debates overheard by these cellarettes
