Can You Find Earthworms in Algonquin Park? Earthworms are not native to Algonquin Park and in fact there are no native earthworms in Ontario. The good news is... if you dig in Algonquin Park’s soil you will have a hard time finding worms, but not everywhere. Worms are becoming increasingly common in Algonquin Park, brought into the Park through their use as bait for fishing and through the transport of soil. Help stop the spread of worms that have been shown to damage native soil communities, hardwood forests, wildflowers, plus increase soil compaction and erosion. If you use earthworms as bait (which is permitted in Algonquin Park), anglers are encouraged to dispose of unused worms in garbage containers (not on the ground) to prevent their introduction into Algonquin Park's soil communities. During Invasive Species Awareness Week 2021, find out more ways to keep invasive species out of Algonquin Park at https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca//programs/junior-ranger-pr #InvasiveSpecies #InvSpWk #AlgonquinPark #Ontario #Canada #nature #parks #ontarioparks #stewardship #protection #ecology #soils #forests #wildlife #fish #fishing

Looking to fish for Whitefish on Simcoe this year? We wrote up an article about them: https://www.fishingsimcoe.com/tips-to-catching-whitefish-on The Mighty Wh...itey One of the most sought after winter sport fish in Lake Simcoe, the abundant Lake Whitefish provides ice anglers with a challenging but rewarding proposition. An opportunistic feeder that can be finicky at times offers up a decent fighting challenge and great table fare. In Lake Simcoe, the MNR stocks approximately 100,000 to 150,000 juvenile whitefish annually and has been doing so for many years now. Although stocking occurs, there is a healthy population of wild, natural reproducing fish as well. Recently, MNR surveys have shown an increase in wild fish captures versus stocked fish. Despite the healthy population of Whitefish in Lake Simcoe, anglers can easily be skunked without the proper know how. Dialing in a pattern and consistently catching these bottom feeders can be a challenge. Getting skunked targeting Lake Simcoe whitefish is a sobering but realistic occurrence. However, by understanding their diet, their location and movements, and using the proper equipment, you can keep those skunked days at bay and catch your limit every outing. Starting in 2021, calf tags will no longer come with the purchase of your moose licence. Hunters must be successful in the allocation process for a calf tag or ...calf/cow tag, or be party hunting with a tag holder, in order to harvest a calf moose. The implementation of calf tag quotas across the province in 2021 will allow MNRF to better manage calf harvest and ensure biologically appropriate harvest levels for all components of the moose population. Implementing calf tag quotas also addresses the increasing demands from hunters for further restrictions on calf harvest to allow increased hunting opportunities for adult moose in the future. Starting in 2021 moose tags will be awarded using a points-based allocation process. In this process, we will not set the required amount of points to be awarde...d for each tag type. This will be determined by the points held by the applicants for each tag type and the number of tags available. Starting in 2022, we will publish the minimum point total that was awarded each tag type in the previous year. If a hunter’s point total is equal to or larger than the minimum points awarded the same tag type in the previous year, they will be likely, but not guaranteed, to be awarded that tag type. To learn more about how moose tags will be distributed to resident hunters next year, visit: Ontario.ca/moosetagprocess

Dear Anglers! I would like to introduce you all to the Broad-winged Hawk Project which has been ongoing in the Gravenhurst area for 3 summers now. As Simcoe Co...unty Banding Group, we have been trapping these little hawks to fit a uniquely numbered metal band with an address on, as well as a second ID band which can be read with binoculars or camera. The reason for this is to monitor the local population to see which birds survive over the years. We are finding out that these birds are site faithful and return to the exact nesting site each year. Broad-winged Hawks migrate to Canada each year from their wintering grounds in South America, arriving in late April and leaving mid September. We have fitted 3 satellite transmitters to birds to find out which routes they take and where exactly they spend the winters. The more we know about these birds, the more we can do to protect them. If you are out fishing and spot a Broad-winged Hawk, and you have either binoculars or a camera, and manage to read a numbered bird, we would be very keen to hear from you. If you ever spot us at the side of the road with a hawk, please stop and come see what we do! See more
