Jar day at the farm! Both of us spent the day filling jars but for very different purposes... Dustin was in the mushroom lab inoculating cooked oats to make more grain spawn. This spawn will eventually go into a growing medium where it will fruit into beautiful edible mushrooms! Also, gardeners, stay tuned for King Stropharia spawn to add to your mulch! I (Katy) filled all my jars with yummy beans for pickling. I had no dill on hand this day but lots of beautiful jalapeños fr...om the greenhouse so did a garlic jalapeño bean. One jar didn’t seal so we had a taste test and SO happy with the results. #caeserbeans Garlic from Golden Boy Gardens, thanks Stefan for the short notice emergency garlic!! #eatlocal #mushrooms #canning #localfood #masonjars #yummy

We are so excited to be taking on this new adventure with Poor Micheal’s! We have some big shoes to fill but we are so grateful for all the help we received from Vaughn as he set us up to succeed. Green Rabbit Farms has officially started making all the goodies you find in Poor Micheal’s and we will be incorporating as much local produce as possible! We are looking forward to putting our own seasonal twist on some of the recipes, but worry not all the favourite staples will always remain #localmb #supportlocal #buylocal #community #RMNP #onanolemb

It’s been a tough season. We have been pretty absent from social media for the past two weeks as we redirect our energy and plan for a more resilient veg production. We had to make the very hard decision recently to cancel our Summer 2020 CSA program, as well as our market attendance at Global Market Brandon, as our main garden took a huge hit from the recent storms.... The huge amount of rain we received in such a short period of time washed out much of the young seedlings and left our more established plants damaged. It was devastating. It’s hard to explain the feeling of loss and failure. BUT! We are modern farmers. We are resilient. We are innovative. We will recover. We are using the energy we put into the CSA to build more and better garden systems. We are expanding the pig garden. We are building raised beds. We are adding organic matter and thicker mulch layers to the soil. We are perfecting greenhouse systems. The garden will also recover too. What survived is now behind in the season for a couple weeks, but the tomatoes are growing new leaves, the potatoes are coming back to life, and the rest will follow. I can’t express our gratitude for our CSA members and others who have generously supported us in this hard time. You are the folks who bring true meaning to the term Community Supported Agriculture!! Stay tuned for Fall 2020 $100 Baskets and other goodies to come! #year2020 #toomuchrain #recovery #resilience #csa #manitobafarming #manitobaweather

This perfect cucumber tendril tho Can’t wait for fresh cucumbers!! This is our first year with this greenhouse and so far it’s been amazing! The cucumbers and tomatoes are coming along so nicely. They were wonderfully protected from all the storms we’ve had the last little while and get the extra heat and humidity that they love. #cucumbers #northerngardening #greenhouse #localfood #knowyourfarmer

Moving farms again meant starting up a new garden space at home and this year we are experimenting! First, the Folk Dance Farm piggies were #pastured in the spot we wanted tilled. It took about two weeks for them to turn lucious sod into freshly broken ground. Their noses are incredible at flipping ground while looking for roots and bugs. All while fertilizing the soil! Now that the piggies have done their job (and once the soil dries out a bit after all that rain), we’ll ...do a quick pass with the garden tiller and add a thick layer of mulch (straw and bedding from the chicken and rabbit coop, filled with wonderful manure!) to cover the exposed soil. Then, plant a few things and inoculate it with wine cap mushrooms (Stropharia rugosoannulata). The wine caps will act as a mycorrhizal partner to the veggies giving them the extra boost they’ll need in this new soil. Stay tuned for more on this experimental garden and to find out more about the wine caps... #pasturedpork #symbiosis #sustainablefarming #meatandmushrooms #outputsareinputs #stropharia #buildingsoil #eatlocal

This is so well said. As we grow our farm and business I (Katy) can find so much to relate to in this but more than anything I find inspiration and admiration. Sometimes things do go wrong and sometimes people don’t take you seriously, but we do this thing because we love it. Our connection to our community and the earth is what drives us. This is just our second year and as we push through our start up phase we hold on tightly to the dream of becoming successful producers ...and entrepreneurs. Thanks for the good words and advice Brown Sugar Produce! We wish you and everyone a day of rest and relaxation today! #marketgardening #smallfarmers #maitobafarmers #supportlocal #smelltheroses #brandonmb

You can now find some of our preserves at The old church Pottery & Gift! This is one of our favourite little shops on the way to Riding Mountain National Park, right off of the #10 highway between Minnedosa and Erickson. Jeff’s pottery is amazing, he experiments with glazes like I’ve never seen before - function and beauty. Check out all of the amazing locally made things there on your way to the lake! #shoplocal #supportlocal #pottery #jamsandjellies #community #RMNP #manitobamade #handmade
