What happens when filmmakers give the cameras to women who are incarcerated? What happens when we hear their voices. This free film and panel discussion are must-sees!

Green Wood Coalition 04.11.2020

Senator (Independent) Kim Pate was the executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies for more than two decades. In 2014, she was named a Member of the Order of Canada for advocating on behalf of women who are marginalized, victimized or incarcerated, and for her research on women in the criminal justice system. Senator Pate voice is featured in the documentary, Conviction, and will be part of our Community 101 online live panel discussion this Thursday, November 26 at 7 PM EST. Thanks to Northumberland United Way you can stream the film and watch the panel discussion for free (follow this link to register). https://www.universe.com//community-101-film-series-ticket

Shout out to the crew members making delicious meals, delivering to folks at home and taking a few minutes for a porch visit. Social inclusion, food security and a little bit of fun on the way! It always takes a village.

Notice how I used my short acceptance speech to educate a new audience? Most NGOs just talk to themselves. Probably every foundation in the homeless sector has ...funded documentary movies that promised massive change but only reached people who already have an affinity for homelessness. If we're going to change the narrative on homelessness, we must intentionally connect with new networks of people, which is what Invisible People focuses on, and why we partner with brands like Hanes. Pepsi and Ritz Crackers.

There are many things we miss as our weekly community dinner is on hold. One of the special things was our monthly birthday celebrations. So, if you see Kim Noseworthy around this week, be sure to wish her a happy birthday from all of us.

Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving. This is always a good time to reflect on the many blessing that come our way. In that vein, as summer fades away, we're re-sharing this sweet community video that we assembled for the Summer Solstice in June. As we look toward the winter coming and pandemic concerns increasing, we know it's going to be incredibly difficult for many people. Covid-19 has highlighted the housing crisis in our community and a growing number of people are finding themselves without a home. We can't fix that--it's a multi-layered problem--but we can continue to show up for people, meeting them where they're at and continue to build a stronger, more caring community that is up to the collective challenges presented by homelessness, hunger, poverty, mental illness and overdose. Stay well and take care of each other.

Take a few minutes to listen to this powerful speech from earlier today by Aspasia Allison Russell. Many of us remember her wonderful performances with Birds of Chicago at Imaginate 2018 in Cobourg. She packs much depth and urgency into these words. #blacklivesmatter #womensmarch2020

Please consider signing this time-sensitive petition today if you can. "Housing is a human right, and it is only truly implemented as a right if everyone has access to supportive and affordable housing. With the government’s current target of reducing chronic homelessness by 50% over 10 years (which is really reducing 50% of 10% of the total number of people who are homeless in a year in Canada), it inherently fails to acknowledge this right and leaves the most marginalized behind."

These t-shirts were designed by Peterborough artist, Alex Bierk, to be sold as a limited run fundraiser for street-level work in his community. Every time David and Nicole wear their shirts they are asked where to buy them. Alex has offered to make a run of these shirts as a fundraiser for Green Wood Coalition. Would you purchase one in solidarity with those who have lost a loved one to overdose? Details to follow.

This is a good time to be exploring alternative ways of approaching crisis work in our communities.

It's great to see some of our partners in Peterborough making a bold move like this to confront the opioid poisoning epidemic that has hit the city so hard. We look forward to this kind of healthcare being normalized as a step back from the brink.
