Today is Vimy Ridge Day in honour of the brave sacrifices made by Canadians in The Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. The Vimy Tree at The Grimsby Museum The Battle of Vimy Ridge was fought in 1917 near Arras in northern France. From the fall of 1914 until 1917, the German army held this eight kilometre-long ridge. Several times the Allies tried to take it from the Germans without success. On 9 April 1917, the Allies attacked again. Four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked th...ree divisions of the German 6th Army defending the ridge. The Battle was won by the Canadians on Easter Monday, 1917. It was the first time that Canadians had attacked as a national unit. However, it cost the Canadians 10,602 casualties. After the Battle of Vimy Ridge, many soldiers realized that they had been part of something truly great. Leslie Miller, born in 1889 in Milliken, ON, looked around the area that was once covered in hardwoods, but the battle took its toll on the environment. An estimated one million shells landed on Vimy Ridge over the four-day battle and decimated its flora. Miller did find a half buried oak tree. The story is told that he gathered up a handful of acorns. The acorns were planted on the family farm, later named "The Vimy Oaks" and still flourish there today. In January 2015, the process began with professional arborists taking cuttings from the crowns of the oaks, which are onto base rootstock. The saplings have been grown at Connon NVK nurseries using an accelerated method. In 2018, The Grimsby Legion applied for one of the saplings with the idea that Grimsby should have a Vimy oak. The legion paid for the sapling, and in early June, it was planted on the lawn in front of the Grimsby Museum. Something incredible happened on December 24, 1914. One of the most interesting people featured in More Gleanings From Grimsby is a lady named Emma Allison (1846-1914). Emma’s family lived on the northwest c...orner of Gibson Ave and Mountain Street and the whole family was involved in running the mill, including Emma. In 1859, Emma was one of the first girls admitted to the Grammar School in Grimsby - she was an exceptional student. Emma was selected to run a six-horsepower Baxter steam engine at the 1876 Woman’s Pavilion during the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. According to Exhibition records the organizers searched for an American woman to run the steam engine - however they couldn’t find one - so they expanded their search and found Emma in Grimsby, Ontario! You can learn more about Emma Allison and other people and families who contributed to Grimsby’s evolution in More Gleanings From Grimsby - available at www.grimsbyhistoricalsociety.com! Books are also available at local retailers Objects To Desire, Cocoon Home Decor and Gifts and Grimsby Museum. #grimsbyhistoricalsociety. #shoplocal See more
