Joe Pine legendary business and marketing visionary details why marketing is going to change. It started with his original book Mass Customization. He details in Episode 04 of The Groundswell Marketing Podcast - http://groundswell.libsyn.com/joe-pine-customering-the-futu "Well I was very clear about it in the book. I do think it's important to always credit the people who came before to understand where ideas came from, but it was one chapter in his book, so I felt it dese...rved a full book length treatment and that's what I did and sort of figuring it out as I went along. But it did resolve the question of what we needed to do. Basically mass customization is giving everybody exactly what they want, but doing it with ideally high volume, with low cost, with efficient operations. So you have both of those coequal imperatives of mass customization which before that was basically an oxymoron. People said you can't do both of those. You either have to be a mass production in which case you have a standardized product and in standardized product you do the same thing over and over again to produce the same product, or you've got to have craft production where you figure it out as you go along or you're filing things together at the end if it's a physical good to make things fit and so forth. Stan then just foresaw that as the cost of customization came down that technology would continue to advance in a way to allow us to meet both mass and customize. Eventually hit upon the best definition, the simplest definition is efficiently serving customers uniquely. That's what mass customization is. Efficiently serving customers uniquely."
