GROW Nova Scotia 16.11.2020

I love walking down the street and seeing a surprise among the grey. Who are they, how do they live, and are they home so I can ask for some of those mulberries? This Permaculture meme is brought to you by @madnessband and their song #ourhouse Brenna Quinlan

Okay friends.... Saturday afternoon quiz. Can you please look on your counter. Look in your cupboard. Look in your fridge. 1) look around at what fresh fruit ...or veg do you have on hand? 2) look for stickers or info on where was it grown? 3) can you share what is the percentage of local food. (to calculate, take the total units of fruit/veggies ie. 15 units of fruit or veg if 2 are local (local being from Nova Scotia), then with calculator or in your head, whichever, 2 / 15 = 0.13 x 100 = 13.33%) Are you willing to share your percentage? What about condiments? How many are made in Nova Scotia? Bread? Grains? Pasta? You see what I mean... Next thought. Why is the number what it is? Could it be higher? Why isn't it higher? What is the reason? What is the limiting belief? Thanks for the feedback and discussion. xoxo P

As many of you know, (or may not know), I have been working on local food initiatives in Nova Scotia for the past few years. Iknow Rebecca and Heather through ...working to increase local food in schools across the province. I have visited this facility and know Rebecca and Heather have been pouring their blood, sweat and tears into this project for the past few years. This will be a GAME CHANGER for Nova Scotia. For our agriculture sector, our health and the future sustainability of our province. If you can give, please do. If you can share, please do. Much love!

This year, the The Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq are running a program called the Youth Pollinator Initiative. They're setting up Indigenous youth all across... the province with beekeeping kits that focus on native bees. They're each getting something like 100 mason bee cocoons, 100 leafcutter bee cocoons, etc. These are all cocoons that were collected in Nova Scotia, from the pollinator gardens they planted last year. This is a time of year when farmers are buying bumblebee quads for their pollination - and these mason/leafcutter bees are at least as good, or better, at doing that than bumblebees. Plus, the kids would be bringing them to farms for free. They're looking for farms that are close to Mi'kmaq communities who would be willing to let youth put up their bee equipment! In case you're worried, these native bees do not interfere with other bees on your property - and they're stingerless (and very gentle). They drastically improve fruit quality and set times on most farms they're brought to.
