Hi, my name is Noah, Med. Student in Educational Research. Read my research thesis Indigenous Students & Work Integrated Learning: Supporting Whole Students with the GSA Thesis Talk Thursday! . How do Indigenous students perceive the benefits of Work Integrated Learning? What is the impact of WIL on the whole student, and what is the pregraduation benefit? .... There was some research about a year ago that showed that students of colour who take WIL have better economic outcomes. The problem was that the number of Indigenous students in the research was too small, and better economic outcomes aren’t actually the direct result of WIL. It’s one of the hoped for outcomes or impacts but that’s not the same thing. Because of that I wanted to find out two things, first what Indigenous students saw as being the benefits of WIL, and second what the holistic and pre-graduation benefits of it are. . Learn about my research with the GSA Thesis Talk Thursday here: www.gsa.ucalgary.ca/thesis-talk @CBCCalgary @UCalgary @ctv_calgary @cityofcalgary About GSA Thesis Talk Thursday: GSA Thesis Talk Thursday is a wonderful opportunity to share stories about the amazing research being done by graduate students at the University of Calgary. Next : Shasta’s Simple Sourdough & Quick-Pickled Onions with Shasta E. Webb (PhD candidate) Date and time: Tuesday Nov 24, 2020. 6 pm. Zoom:... Meeting ID: 963 0238 8456, Passcode: 313123 Abstract: Have you ever smelled the alluring aroma of a hot, fresh loaf of sourdough? Have you ever heard the song of sourdoughthe crinkle of the crust cooling after being pulled from a hot oven? Have you ever seen photos of glorious, plump loaves, and wanted to try a big bite? Have you ever paused to ask what sourdough actually is, or wanted to make it yourself? In the broadest sense, a sourdough bread is any bread made using naturally occurring yeast and bacteria, as opposed to commercial active yeast or other rising agents. Sourdough has a long history and global reach. For an evening, we will discuss the origins of sourdough and other fermented foods, talk about sourdough through the ages, and learn the basics of making it. Since the process requires long fermentation times, the live event will go over the steps in condensed time, but will leave you with the skills you need to produce beautiful bread with an interesting evolutionary and cultural history. All you need is salt, water, flour, microorganisms, and patience! Consult the images below for ingredients and instructions. . Please email Chelsea at [email protected] by November 20th to request your starter. Recipes Near and Far,' is a GAASA organized event with AnthArky grad students leading cooking sessions of recipes from the field or their home countries or heritages. A list of ingredients [with alternatives for dietary restrictions] will be provided beforehand so that you can follow along if you so choose. Note: you can still participate without cooking! We will also learn about and discuss cultural contexts and histories of the dishes we create! If you're interested in sharing a cultural dish close to you, email [email protected].

Hi, my name is Deborah, a doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Nursing. My research thesis is titled Composing and Recomposing Identities as Lesbian Birth Mother: A narrative inquiry. . I was inspired to do this research by two women I met early in my career as a labour and delivery nurse in the winter of 2000. Two moms were negotiating perinatal care together in Calgary, but the healthcare system only formally recognized the birth mom, erasing the co-mother. Since then, ther...e have been positive changes for lesbian birth mothers and their families. Still, little known about how lesbian birth mothers experience maternity care. Healthcare providers need to understand lesbian birth mothers' experiences to provide safe and compassionate maternity care for this often marginalized population. . November 20 marks Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) which has become the largest multi-venue transgender event in the world. As we remember the trans lives lost in the last year, we hold space for their complexities as humans: their beauty, resilience, resistance, power, and their full spectrums of good, bad, and otherwise. We honour each and every one of their lives and we grieve each and every loss. Memorialize the trans lives lost, learn about the structures and condition...s for violence, transmisogynoir, and reimagine trans futures in this article Remembering Trans Lives, Resisting Trans-misogynoir, and Reimagining Trans Futures by Jamie Anderson, Pedrom Nasiri, and the GSA Gender and Sexuality Alliance Subcommittee: https://gsa.ucalgary.ca/transgender-day-of-remembrance-2020/ #TDoR2020 #TDoR
