Feature Fur-iday: This incredibly handsome boy is Bowser . Bowser means the world to his mom. He was just a pup when he joined his family as an anniversary present from his parents to each other. They were told that he wouldn’t be good with children, so when they found out they were expecting they worked with him around the clock. Sadly during that time Bowser’s dad passed away. Bowser and his brother Tank were all that kept mom going and gave her a purpose. She had to keep... training him before the new baby arrived! Now him and his little human are best friends! Bowser came to us in September for a mass associated with his lower jaw. Dr. Colin Sereda performed a partial mandibulectomy to remove that portion of his jaw. The pathology report was concerning for a type of cancer called sarcoma but also showed that all of the tumour was removed. Bowser still needs constant monitoring of his mouth and to see his vet at least twice a year to make sure nothing has come back. We are sending all our love and best wishes to this amazing boy. #vcapets #vcacares #kickingcancersbutt

New year, new CT We’re all very excited to have a brand new CT machine! CT (computed tomography) uses a series of x-rays, taken at different angles, and combines them using a computer to create sectional images of the body. This allows our doctors to see detailed anatomy within the body to diagnose and help plan treatment for a large variety of conditions.... A dye contrast can be used to highlight blood vessels or masses throughout the body. Sometimes we even print 3D models to provide detailed pre-operative planning for a surgery. CT vs MRI: CT is superior for assessing bone, while MRI is superior for very detailed images of soft tissue structures. However, CT is sufficient for imaging the majority of soft tissue structures in our veterinary patients and is therefore widely used. On average we do 40-50 CT’s a month. These are done under sedation or general anesthesia. CT requests need a referral to one of our specialty departments. #LifeAtVCA #Ct

Congratulations Libby on finishing chemotherapy and being cancer free! Libby first came to see Dr. Colin Sereda in 2018 because she was lame on her front left leg. Her shoulder and elbow both showed degenerative changes. She had a CT, an MRI, steroid injections and shockwave therapy to help diagnose and improve her lameness. Later on Libby came back to see Dr Lindsey Kurach in June 2020 for suspected right ocular melanoma and draining tracts associated with a previous anal ...sac abscess. She underwent surgery to remove her right eye and her anal glands which were sent away for pathology. Luckily her eye mass was benign and she adjusted very well to only having one eye. Unfortunately her anal gland came back as a type of cancer called adenocarcinoma. She was transferred to the internal medicine department where Dr. Ken Cockwill did an abdominal ultrasound to see if the cancer had spread. Luckily her abdomen was clear and she started chemotherapy July 2020 Libby was adopted from Taiwan by her loving family She loves to spend her days hanging out with her people and going for walks. Libby’s one of the most sweetest German Shepard’s both inside and outside the clinic #VCAPets #vcacares #chemotherapy #fighter
