Fun fact, baby friendly initiative is a strategy to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding. It is from the 1991 global Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) outlined by WHO/UNICEF. Posted @withregram @wholechildco Black Breastfeeding Week begins today and brings awareness to the gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates, both in initiation and duration of breastfeeding. What we know to be true is that white privilege exists in the breastfeeding community in a very big way: CDC data shows that 85% of white women have ever breastfed versus 69% of black women Black babies are dying at twice the rate (in some places, nearly triple) the rate of whit...e babies A study showed 21% of Black mothers hospitalized for childbirth reported perceptions of poor treatment due to race, ethnicity, cultural background or language Many Black communities cannot access support for the best first-food, breastmilk, which is known to reduce the risk of diseases that Black children have the highest rates of including respiratory infections, asthma, childhood obesity + more It is also not debatable that breastfeeding advocacy is white female-led. It unfortunately perpetuates the common misconception that black women don’t breastfeed. It also means that many of the lactation professionals, though well-intentioned, are not culturally competent, sensitive or relevant enough to properly deal with African American moms- Kimberly Seals Allers- founder of BBW This is happening in our communities. Everywhere. There is a lot of work to be done here and it extends far beyond this week. In honour of Black Breastfeeding Week, I will be sending a copy of Free to Breastfeed: Voices of Black Mothers by Anayah Sangodele-Ayoka, founder of BBW to the first 5 people who would like to learn more. Simply comment below and I will message you to get your shipping information. . . . #blackbreastfeedingweek #blacklivesmatter #bbw20 #reviverestorereclaim

She has a passion for helping mothers on their breastfeeding journey from start to finish. As a mom herself, Billie Jo understands the struggles that come with breastfeeding for the first time. Posted @withregram @haltonhealthcare Nicole is a Registered Practical Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in the Breastfeeding Clinic at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Her favourite part about working in the clinic is being able to help families feel confident when feeding and caring for their babies. She loves spending time with families and preparing them for their parenting journey. Nicole’s best piece of advice for new moms is to set a goal and spend time learning about breastfeeding. Educating yourself as much as possible allows you to create a plan and reach your breastfeeding goals quicker. #WBW2020 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek
All women/parents have the right to be supported by society to breastfeed optimally. Support can come from families, communities, health systems and workplaces. Breastfeeding counselling is a type of support delivered to women/parents and infants, and when breastfeeding counselling is available/accessible, the duration and exclusivity of #breastfeeding is increased! . . . Posted @withregram @haltonhealthcare Augusta is a Registered Nurse in the Obstetrics department at Georgetown Hospital and plays an important role in supporting new and expecting moms with breastfeeding. She reminds expecting moms on the importance of education both before and after labour. Taking the time to educate yourself on breastfeeding tips and techniques can help lead to a positive breastfeeding experience. Her best piece of advice is the importance of skin to skin contact immediately after delivery. Holding your baby as much as possible in the early days helps comfort the baby and can lead to latching without assistance. #WBW2020 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek2020 #supportbreastfeedingforahealthierplanet

Posted @withregram @haltonhealthcare Kathleen is a Registered Nurse and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in the Breastfeeding Clinic at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. A typical day in the Breastfeeding Clinic begins by looking at the list of patients and assessing who is the most at risk for feeding issues. She will visit all first time mothers and those who have babies in the Special Care Nursery. During her visits, Kathleen will reassure and sup...port infant feeding by providing advice and tips. She also works with outpatient babies by assessing their needs while at home. Kathleen loves being able to see moms become more confident in their ability to nurse on their own. She cannot stress enough the importance of relaxing and trusting your body and to remember babies may not always be ready to feed right away. #WBW2020 #WorldBreastfeedingWeek See more
