A female Pileated Woodpecker spent a few weeks with us after suffering a major concussion and coracoid injury. She was found at the end of a driveway in Dieppe,... a victim of a vehicle strike. She had blood coming out of her mouth, not able to stand and could not spread her wings. Supportive care and a protective environment in our main bird room allowed the appropriate time for her to heal. She was sent home recently, in a wooded area behind where she was initially found. That is her home turf, and these territorial adult birds need to go back where they came from. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find safe areas to release animals back into. Ongoing development, both residental and commercial, are constantly shrinking wild animal habitats. We need to share our space more effectively. We need to do better. Pileated Woodpeckers are stunning. They are the largest of our Woodpeckers, with a striking color pattern, easily identified by their black and white pattern, red crest and big 2 ft+ wingspan. (Males will have an addtional red cheek patch.) Their undulating flight is very distinctive. These are birds of the forest, preferring old growth for nesting cavities, stands of dead and dying trees so they can drill long, rectangular holes to find insects. They have adapted to our younger forests though, but these birds are indicators of forest health, and are necessary to keep balance ecosystems. See more
