With a background in Kinesiology and Physical Therapy, Matt’s interests range from pain science, injury causation, patterns of injuries and management of complex injuries. Utilization of technology to aid injury management became a growing interest and with regular interaction of individuals within the insurance sector, it became apparent there is a significant need for new innovative solutions and technology to help identify injuries earlier allowing for more efficient treat...ment pathways. Building off his interest and passion for technology, data and research, the evolution of Talem Health Analytics followed. Our goal is to bridge technology with clinical and forensic expertise so we can proactively manage bodily injury claims in a more positive fashion for the patient, health care provider and insurance company. Matthew is always open to connect and work with customers to understand problems and collaboratively create ideal solutions.

Paul comes from a family of entrepreneurs, beginning his entrepreneurial journey early through farming, selling Christmas Trees, real estate development and owning/operating a physiotherapy clinic in Sydney, NS. Paul has extensive clinical experience, with over 15 years as a Kinesiologist, Physiotherapist and recently adjunct lecturer at CBU. He brings expertise in injury recovery and injury causation. Research and technology has been a natural progression leading to Talem a...nd their current endeavours of the application of computer vision in predicting change in velocity in auto collisions and correlation to injury. He is a key contributor towards product development, acquiring talent, partnerships and customers, while leading the company’s vision. Paul works actively with insurers to create transparency at throughout the claim life cycle. Empowering policyholders, insurance professionals and healthcare professionals with a transparent claim experience.

Paul Travis, CEO and Matthew Kay, COO identified the lack of effective triage and understanding of proper injury management as being the tip of the iceberg, affecting claim productivity and experience. In 2019, Talem released the Biomechanical review, a direct use case for insurers, where Talem identifies the delta-v and injuries with minimal information. Talem has expanded and continues the approach of introducing technology and processes to streamline traditional insurance services. Talem Health Analytics now offers the Biomechanical review and pairs this with expertise to determine treatment and medical billing appropriateness and necessity. 2020 has created new challenges and priorities for auto insurers. Productivity, AI and customer experience are among these and claims management is a specific devision that will benefit. Understanding the injury in a streamlined approach is best for all stakeholders.

An injury cap reduces costs of minor, short-term injury payouts. Although there are benefits, problems often occur. Often injuries are upcoded to fall outside the cap, your emphasis should be understanding the injury to know which side of the cap the injury is on.

What is waste considered to you? Inefficient or no value add activities and processes? Assignment, reserving, medical approval and settlement are process often containing unidentified and inappropraite expenses, a biomechanical review curbs the impact of claims waste.

Often, diagnostics are used to prove injury. But, does this approach prove causation or simply, identify? It's important for a thorough assessment and biomechanical review to understand if what is identified are normal age related changes. Identification does not mean causation.
