Pulling up a Yellow Perch is often a child's first memory of fishing in Ontario waters. This beautifully striped and tasty fish is a staple in Ontario's fishery... and a species that is sought after, almost year-round. But, did you know that this species is at risk of being out-competed by the invasive Grass Carp? A study by Gertzen et al. (2017) showed that Yellow Perch populations would experience declines if Grass Carp were to become established. To protect Ontario's fishery, if you suspect you've seen or captured a Grass Carp, take a photo, note your location, and call the Invading Species Hotline at 1-800-563-7711, or report online at www.EDDMapS.org/Ontario

Trying to keep our minds in the game until the hardwater returns A lot of y’all might remember seeing Alex in the village over the years helping out and dialing in locations. He’s been busy refurbishing this old boat, and he’s killing the Lake O game... Was a treat to spend the day on soft water with buds Alex Chung, The Wooded Beardsman, and Scott Powers. https://youtu.be/uwAdmz-UyCc

We can’t wait for the ice, but we filled some of our time today with some old and new friends, exploring the woods, learning to find some edible shrooms Fervent Finds puts on a great foraging clinic, and we sure learned a lot from them. There’s no way we could absorb all the information in one afternoon, but, we definitely got a good start to foraging on our own. Check their page for upcoming clinics. They are booking up, but, still have space in a few of the upcoming events

Finishing touches are all that’s left for this cottage project We’ve been talking about it for a few years now, but, this 3x bedroom cottage will be ready to pair with a duck hunt this fall, and an ice hut this winter. We appreciate your patience, the wait will be worth it

Hot Box Huts 30.06.2020

Last fall we were pretty excited to take on our wild rice project. With a 10-20 acre pond, we contacted local MNRF to source the same seed they used for their ...project on Lake Simcoe. Our pond is approx 1km from the lake and is connected to it by a cold water creek. We were nervous to spend several hundred dollars to acquire fresh seed from Manitoba. Rice can’t dry out, it needs to be harvested and kept wet for planting. Super pumped to see it taking off this season. Our trumpeter swans have been real hard on it(you can tell from the pic),but we will keep an eye on things into next spring and see if it seeds itself. Real pleased to see it even grow and take off

Super pumped to meet mom and her 3x cubs in person at last light tonight Seen them on trail cam and was really hoping we would run into each other. Might need to change our skivvies though......ran into them again after dark on the way to the truck. Couldn’t see anything... just hear cubs running up trees, hoping mom wasn’t too upset

Hot Box Huts 06.05.2020

First carp shoot of the season is in the books Less than ideal conditions had us shooting in the wind and rain, but made for a challenging and rewarding day. Was a treat to set The Wooded Beardsman and Subscriber Scott Powers up to take a poke at some carp, and they brought some skills and didn’t disappoint... For those with deposits in, we will be reaching out over the next few days to get you on the water

While not quite meeting N95 standards, our Hot Box Huts Hoo-Rags are still recommended to help keep you from moistly speaking on others. (And keeping you looking pretty dang snazzy at the same time). Yup, we can ship. PM for pricing.

Now we have a great reason to be pumped for soft water on Simcoe We don’t only offer up a package for the Perchin For MS auction, we take advantage and bid on some of the awesome charters up for grabs. We have been the highest bidder on many items in the past, and spent what felt like a whole summer fishing auction winnings a few years ago. This year we are pumped to have won the offering from Captain Greg Amiel of Fishing 4 Tails. ... As tempting as an Erie walleye charter sounds, we think we might try and talk Greg into something more local Thanks Greg for donating to Doug and his team for a great cause

Hot Box Huts 08.02.2020

You know you got some dang big Hot Box Huts when you require heavy tow to move ‘em Thanks for the efforts and fun boys.

Hot Box Huts 04.02.2020

We absolutely love this time of year and the challenges it brings. No time for debates, only brisk and experienced decisions to get the job done This was legit the safest spot for us to pull the remainder of our huts off before the deadline looming just a few hours away. We considered posting some videos, but figured it’s best to hold our trade secrets tight... Super stoked to have our die hards out yesterday, who didn’t mind crossing our shoreline Bridge of Terror We will still be out and about this week to remove the trees from our road, and a few frozen in jacking blocks. We already cleaned up the mess left behind by a few of the local permanent huts..... every dang year If you’re out and about on foot, be careful. There’s still some super soft spots in the heavily fished areas that we have observed. We have marked our open areas from our last couple huts and cribs, but you still might encounter thin ice and large drain holes in the area. Fish hard and play safe

Hot Box Huts 25.01.2020

Thanks everyone for coming out this winter. Was great to see some familiar faces, and we made some new friends too. See y’all for the 2020/2021 ice fishing season on Lake Simcoe https://youtu.be/ZAzgfzvt4MY

We at Hot Box Huts jump at the opportunity to help our neighbours in need. We are pleased to assist this young gentleman after we heard he was struggling to locate paper products

Hot Box Huts 08.01.2020

Our shoreline is taking a turn for the worst, but we got ‘er solved. No problem getting our clients out to their huts on 12+ of solid black ice tomorrow Sorry, we are full, as we are running a reduced fleet to get everything off for the deadline tomorrow night. ... Just to advise, this bridge will also be removed tomorrow, so don’t count it if you plan on walking after Sunday.

Will be running right to the March 15th hut removal deadline Still taking bookings for next week, and weekend. Hot Box Huts 16.11.2019

I am a Jumboholic I am so bored with whitefish. After hundreds and hundreds of them this year its getting a little old. For me its on to perch. Once I get perch...in I just lose time. I'm addicted to looking for jumbo's. I never intend to stay more than a couple of hours, but hours later I'm still there. Its always just one last fish, then one more, then just one more. I only keep a dozen but I'm never satisfied and completely forget I have to clean them when I get home. Jumbo's seem to have changed where they spend the winter and when they stage to spawn. Some years I find them where they are supposed to be and other years there is a lot of moving and drilling. When they are migrating to stage, there are some common areas. They stagger their arrival and just before ice out they always seem to be in very consolidated areas. You don't actually have to move very much . The big females cover a lot of water collecting more and more fish as the swim around these compression areas. This year seems to be a little better than last according to the lakesimcoemessageboard.com survey. We try to run this every year just to get a feel for what the really good perchers are finding. For me, it has been a great year but I only fish for them first ice and last ice. If the last couple of days is any indication its going to be a perfect ice out haul. Maybe I'll get my fix! There is some monsters out there. Aqua-Vu Clam Outdoors Berkley Fishing Fenwick Fishing #jumboholic

We will be out on the hardwater yet again this weekend. Mother Nature was kinder to us than expected, and she knocked down our snow, and froze up our puddles Still some room for Saturday and Sunday. Message us to get your booking in.

Cutting 14-15 total ice in our hut city. Did a loop around the bay, and discovered most of our snow has blown away to a Keswick. Not yet experiencing any of the slush that we are expecting, and our ice is still hard with 13 of black. ... https://youtu.be/MD990TD7AqM

And here we were worried about our machines getting stuck on the ice today If y’all wouldn’t mind parking on the street instead of in the ditch, that would be great Y’all shoulda bought a Toyota... Edited to add #4 Edited again for #5 We don’t usually post any pics from our recoveries and tugs, but it’s a regular part of us doing business and figured y’all would get a kick out of ‘em
