A Breakdown on Heartburn and What's Causing the Discomfort The other night, while laying in my bed and dealing with a horrible bout of heartburn (perhaps triggered by my extra large order of Old Bay fries), I realized I had no idea what was physically going on in my body to cause the discomfort. "Heartburn is caused by digestive acid from your stomach that moves up into your esophagus after you swallow food or liquid," Dr. Elmer Chang, a gastroenterologist with Mission Hospi...tal in Southern California, says. "My patients with heartburn describe it beginning with a burning sensation in the upper abdomen that then travels up into the chest. You may also have a bitter taste in the back of your mouth." You've probably heard someone, besides me, complain of heartburn - many people experience this discomfort occasionally. "The good news is that heartburn can typically be treated at home with over-the-counter medications such as antacids and acid blockers," Dr. Chang adds. It's very important to note that heartburn is actually a symptom that can be experienced in different conditions, Dr. Chang says, such as acid reflux or GERD. If you're experiencing severe heartburn on a regular basis, or if you have any concerns at all, you should speak to your doctor. "Heartburn is the most common symptom of GERD. If left untreated, GERD can scar your esophagus and potentially damage your teeth," Dr. Chang explains. As for how I can reduce my chances of feeling that late-night heartburn again? (As a reminder, I downed French fries, and then immediately went to bed.) According to Dr. Adam Goodman, MD, section chief of gastroenterology at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, it is "recommended to avoid assuming a supine position after meals and avoiding meals 2-3 hours before bedtime. This can reduce reflux of a recent meal into the esophagus leading to symptoms." I'm also going to keep in mind Dr. Goodman's list of foods that are known to trigger heartburn: "spicy foods, tomato sauce, citrus fruits, high fat foods, chocolate, caffeine, carbonated beverages and peppermint." Donald Trump Said 85 Percent of People Who Wear Masks Get COVID-19. He's Wrong. In a town hall-style event littered with his characteristic half-truths, exaggerations, and blatant lies, President Donald Trump delivered perhaps one of the most dangerous misrepresentations of scientific data to date, when he falsely claimed that 85 percent of people who wear masks contract COVID-19. Though wildly misinterpreted, the number stems from a report from the Centers For Disease Contro...l (CDC), in which researchers assessed the community exposures that were most likely to predict someone testing positive for COVID-19. As moderator Savannah Guthrie pointed out during the NBC town hall, the findings were actually "mask neutral." Among the 154 patients who tested positive for COVID-19, 85 percent reported wearing a mask always or often. By comparison, 89 percent of people who tested negative, despite having COVID-like symptoms, reported doing the same. While the study wasn't designed to draw any conclusions on mask wearing, it's worth noting that this data was self-reported, which can be unreliable. Wearing a mask is the socially acceptable thing to do, and it's possible that the numbers reflect that. The CDC has also never claimed that a mask will shield the wearer from the virus. Masks prevent respiratory droplets from escaping into the air, which can help reduce the spread in the event that the person wearing the mask has COVID-19. More importantly, the study found that, in the two weeks prior to developing symptoms, the most likely predictors of COVID-19 infection were close contact with someone who had tested positive and dining at a restaurant. In fact, those with COVID-19 were more than twice as likely to report dining out than those who tested negative. Restaurants have long been considered a risk, because masks can't be worn while eating. When releasing the findings of the study, the CDC encouraged people to choose pick-up and delivery if possible. It's unclear if Trump purposely mischaracterized the research, or if he simply didn't take the time to understand it - but coming from a White House that has consistently flouted CDC guidelines on mask wearing and social distancing, it's alarming at best. Pre-Date Meditation Might Be the Secret Boost Your Love Life is Missing Everyone gets nervous before a first date, between the pressure of meeting someone new, the back-and-forth about where to go, and, of course, the ever-torturesome pre-date debate: what to wear. Throw in the ongoing health crisis and the fact that you may be having your first date via FaceTime or Zoom, and the stress is very, very real. Luckily, Hinge and Headspace want to help make all of your pesky date ...anxiety go away. The dating app and the mindfulness app have partnered on a series of meditation videos designed to make you feel calm and confident before a date. The two guided sessions, available for free on YouTube and the Hinge website, are called "Pre-Date Meditation" and "Inner Voice Meditation." Each one clocks in at just under eight minutes and is narrated by Eve Lewis, the director of meditation at Headspace. "You are potentially meeting someone for the first time and it can feel really uncomfortable not knowing how it will go." Lewis explains that the tendency to imagine different scenarios of what might happen - though a tempting thought-process - takes you out of the present moment. This meditation session focuses on the body scan technique, in which you pay close attention to different parts of your body from head-to-toe, grounding yourself firmly in the present. The Inner Voice meditation is intended to help you identify negative thoughts and quiet uncertainty. Lewis talks through the noting technique of labeling any distractions during the meditation as either thoughts or feelings. You can apply this method after your meditation session is over to catch yourself when you get carried away with negative thoughts. Hinge and Headspace may not be able to tell you which sweater matches your boots or which Zoom background to choose, but these meditation videos can help ease some of the self-doubt that inevitably comes with dating.
