BC Transit COVID-19 updates BC Transit is continuing to provide transportation services customers can rely on as we recognize people still need to get to work..., including at healthcare facilities, or other activities such as weekly grocery shopping trips. BC Transit places the safety of our riders, staff, and communities as our top priority. The Province of BC and the Provincial Health Officer continue to lead the response to COVID-19, and BC Transit is taking their advice to identify and implement new measures to enhance safety throughout the BC Transit system. We want to assure you we are taking the Coronavirus COVID-19 situation seriously, and we are implementing plans based on advice from health experts. We have already implemented enhanced measures in response to COVID-19 including: Enhanced cleaning on buses and at BC Transit facilities Communication to staff and customers about physical distancing procedures Rear door loading (as available) Not collecting fares Limiting passenger capacity to support physical distancing Enhancing the red line for passengers to stand behind Updates from BC Transit are available below. For more information, please visit BCTransit.com/COVID19 Vinyl panels on light duty buses As our light duty buses do not have a rear door for loading, BC Transit will begin installing vinyl panels to support physical distancing for transit operators and customers. Light duty buses are largely used for handyDART and community transit services. For our light duty bus fleet, these steps are in addition to other safety and physical distancing measures implemented including: Enhanced cleaning on buses and at facilities Not collecting fares Limiting passenger capacity Communication to staff and customers about physical distancing procedures Extension of rear door boarding and not collecting fares BC Transit will be extending our rear door boarding and not collecting fares procedures until April 30, 2020. The extension means customers do not need to purchase monthly passes or other fares for the month of April. Details about refund processes for March and April fare products will be available when we announce the return to regular fare collection. Thank you to front line staff BC Transit is sending a thank you out to staff providing front line services during the response to COVID-19. Our team, including our transit operators, are working hard to ensure essential transportation services are available for those who need to get to work in essential service industries, get their weekly groceries, or pick up a prescription. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

BC Transit to limit number of passengers for physical distancing From the organization: BC Transit is taking additional measures to support physical distancin...g by reducing the number of passengers on board BC Transit buses. As of Monday, March 30, our transit operators will be monitoring passenger capacity based on direction from BC Transit operations. This will allow additional space in-between customers, and provide space for people to move within the bus if they feel necessary. With changes at post-secondary schools, primary and secondary schools, businesses and government agencies, BC Transit has seen a decrease in ridership of about 50 to 70 per cent depending on the transit system. We do not anticipate pass-ups with this change based on current ridership statistics, and if there are pass-ups we will track the instances through our normal process and make adjustments are required. We ask customers to please leave plenty of time for their transit trip to allow for physical distancing, and thank our customers for their patience. BC Transit has already implemented the following physical distancing measures: Rear door loading, except for those with accessible needs Not collecting fares Enhancing the red line for customers to remain behind to provide physical distance from the operator Promoting good etiquette on transit for physical distance including providing space for other customers and checking passenger loads before traveling We are also reviewing service levels in communities across the province, and will continue to make adjustments based on resource availability and ensuring appropriate physical distancing can be practiced. We are continuing to be there for those that need transportation services including people going to work at healthcare facilities and other critical services, and going for a weekly grocery trip. If you have questions or comments, please contact your local transit office through BCTransit.com or call your local transit office.

Last night I woke up in a free fall. Head hot, body cold. Breathing felt laboured. Chest was tight. My thoughts were dark and dangerous. And panic was building.... It was 1:21am. 11 years ago this month, my Dad asked me, "if I ever wanted to go skydiving?" We had just finished church and we were standing in the lobby "fellowshipping." That's Christianese for "shooting the shit." Before answering, I quickly noted his question deserved 100% on Rotten Tomatoes for its "random yet intoxicating effect." My ego spoke first. "Absolutely, I've wanted to skydive my entire life..wait.. why." Dad was already walking away. Dad? He returned with a professional skydive instructor named Kyle who offered to take me up after lunch. My ego swore. My higher self didn't want to hurt Kyle's feelings. "Oh wow, today, that would be amazing Kyle. That's so nice of you!!" Also, is it hot in here? 4 hours later we were pulling up to Skydive Carolina. I had wrangled my nephew, Luke, to dive with me as well and he looked as excited/white as me. We arrived and they quickly took us into a little room. Made us watch a blurry video on the basics of skydiving. After removing the VHS tape they handed us a liability form. I jokingly said, "If I die, I promise I won't sue you guys." Nobody laughed. We geared up. Practiced our moves. Then walked out to the crowded plane. As first timers, we were only allowed to jump if we were attached to a grown person so there I sat awkwardly attached to Kyle. We took off. 15 min later Kyle held out his altimeter showing we had just passed 10K. "We're close," he screamed in my ear. At 14,000 feet the door to the plane slid open. "Isn't that, you know, dangerous? I wanted to say. My chest tightened. Next thing I knew, human beings everywhere were jumping out of the plane like it was the most logical thing in the world to do. I suppose it was. When it was my turn, Kyle pointed at the door. I stood up in a daze, walked while dragging a grown man behind me and stopped at the edge and peered over. Thoughts dark and dangerous. NOW, Kyle screamed out. While my brain attempted to process, my legs obeyed. Next thing I knew, the wind was whipping my face and the ground was getting closer. After a few seconds of a building panic I remembered something. I'm not alone. Plus we have a parachute. In that moment my mindset shifted and I actually enjoyed the rest of the free fall and subsequent 5 min float back down to earth. When we landed I felt reborn. I turned to see Luke landing and ran over to him. We hugged like we had just escaped death. It was late afternoon. I hadn't told Angie or the kids and actually didn't until the following week when I flew back home and casually put a DVD in the player and said, "hey check out this cool thing I did." It remains one of the greatest experiences of my life. So why did last night feel so dark? And dangerous. And unsafe? Physiologically speaking, my brain was giving the exact same messages as it did when I went skydiving yet for some reason my interpretation of them was completely different. Last night's hot and cold was now labeled as possible flu. The tight chest as panic. The rapid heartbeat was danger. Covid-19? Of course, it wasn't Covid-19. It wasn't even dangerous. I was simply free falling. It wasn't until I made this connection that all of my symptoms vanished as quickly as they came. Skydiving is incredible for one reason. Ok, 2. It's done in tandem and there's a parachute. Hell, there's even an emergency parachute should the primary one fail. Falling would be horrific otherwise. A 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nobody would survive. Hope is a parachute. This is the phrase that finally grounded me at 2:26am. Our world is currently in an involuntary free fall. We didn't sign up for this and there's no VHS instructional video. One day, we were simply yanked from our grounded state and pushed from a plane. We are currently feeling the effects. When falling, it's difficult to get your bearings. Logic is impossible. Our brain is in survival mode and obsessed with one thing. Landing safely. And..there better be toilet paper. How might things be different if we reminded ourselves that despite our fall, we are in tandem. And attached to professionals. And most importantly, we have a parachute. This is not a one way trip to certain death but a journey to a more grounded state. We will survive this. Our parachute is self isolation. Our professionals will lead us home.

Environment Canada has issued a snow advisory for the southwest coast The advisory states: Significant Snow on Tuesday. ... A favourable set up for widespread low elevation snow over the south coast is shaping up for Tuesday and Tuesday night. A front will track down the BC coast beginning Tuesday morning and combine with a cool airmass to produce snow across the lowlands. Snowfall amounts will vary significantly across the region. The air will be cool, but not truly Arctic, so snowfall amounts will vary with proximity to the water, elevation and intensity of precipitation. Anywhere from 5 to 20 cm of heavy, wet snow is expected. The highest amounts are likely over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley where the snow will persist the longest, until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Warmer air will arrive faster over Vancouver Island and the transition to rain there will start Tuesday afternoon. Precipitation should be rain everywhere across the south coast lowlands by Wednesday as a flow of milder Pacific air returns. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #BCStorm.
