Update: Well, this post had an unexpectedly large response with a variety of passionate opinions. One person even had to be banned over it when he doubled down ...on his insult. So, here are a few Potty Training 101 reminders: - The primary audience for this Zen page is early educators who work in group care programs. In the U.S. we are required to sanitize toilets between uses. - Children as young as 18 months can understand situational expectations; it is ok to draw on this surface but not on that one. - seating children backwards is a long-standing, commonly-used practice, especially for boys who are just learning to aim. - Potty training only works well and smoothly when the children are ready developmentally. Part of that journey is just becoming acclimated to sitting on a toilet, with no pressure to poop or pee. This activity, along with singing, finger plays, book reading by the adult or child, musical instruments, and warm conversation between children and adults are all possibly effective strategies. Different children respond to different supports. Adults need to be patient and consistent over time. This is every day for months. - In most child care programs potty seats are not used if child-sized toilets are installed. However, an additional, low potty chair can be helpful for some anxious toddlers who feel more secure with their feet flat on the floor. - Children are not left alone. In fact, often in child care, there are multiple toilets and the caregiver is there with all of them, creating a lovely, relaxing, enjoyable experience, other toddlers seated with her, waiting until it is their turn. She encourages children to poop or pee when they’re ready and acknowledges all attempts and successes (even just sitting on the potty for a moment, in the beginning, is a success to be acknowledged). - When I was a toddler teacher we had daily group Potty Parades to the bathroom and Potty Parties once there. We laughed, talked, sung and cheered on each other’s successes.
