Raising awareness of the growing problem of textile waste, a new plan gives old clothes a second chance. In a November 16, 2020, The Eco Hub article (3 minute read), A New Textile Diversion Plan Is Urging Us To Give Our Clothes A New Life, we learn about a campaign that makes use of unwanted clothing. Textile waste is a huge problem because natural textiles biodegrade in landfills, producing CO2 and methane emissions that contribute to climate change; while synthetic materials do not biodegrade and instead stay forever in landfills, explains Candice Batista, an environmental journalist. This plan is an opportunity to change. http://bit.ly/TextileDiversionPlan
OVEN CLEANER! Time heals, even when it comes to cleaning ovens. Conventional oven cleaner is a toxic product that can irritate the respiratory tract and is dangerous when used around children and pets. There is a way to cut grease, clean grime, and naturally polish your oven without the risk of toxic exposure. Like baking soda and salt, pantry staples make effective scouring agents. The secret ingredient in a natural oven cleaner recipe is time, as you allow several hours for the mixture to set in and work its magic. Try this non-toxic oven cleaner recipe by IHN graduate Kathrin Brunner. http://bit.ly/OvenCleanerKathrinBrunner
The world may have slowed down outside, yet we are at home doing as much work as before, just with fewer boundaries. In an April 4, 2021, Global News article (4 minute read), Giving Yourself Permission To Be Lazy, Toronto-based happiness researcher, Gillian Mandich, confirms that we tend to glorify accomplishments. Laziness isn’t ever celebrated, even though it is restorative and builds self-awareness. Mandich says, though it might be counterintuitive if we allow ourselves to be lazy when those feelings arise, it can lead to better physical and mental health in the long run. http://bit.ly/AlreadyDoingEnough

For many women, the word ‘self-care’ needs a re-brand. It is a term that evokes mixed emotions and how women respond to it, directly impacts their wellbeing. According to Lisa Petty’s self-care research published in a November 12, 2020, Alive article (4 minute read), What’s In A Name? the term has various implications, yet many associate it with indulgences rather than healthcare. Petty reveals, While all the women agreed that engaging in activities to support their well-being is important, they were not in agreement about the word ‘self-care’ itself. https://bit.ly/3oCseB0

GHEE! Ghee, or clarified butter, can be obtained by melting butter and removing the non-fat ingredients (water, proteins, and carbohydrates) leaving a nutrient-rich golden yellow liquid. Compared to regular butter, ghee can be heated to a higher temperature without burning, has a longer storage life, plus numerous health benefits. Ghee is often recommended for those who suffer from dairy intolerance as it is easier for the body to digest since it does not contain casein or lactose. Incorporate ghee into your weekly meals with this Ghee Roasted Parsley Potatoes recipe by IHN graduate Rachel Molenda. https://bit.ly/3pTnR4F
Mexico is taking determined steps toward a healthier agriculture industry by banning glyphosate-based herbicides by 2024. Given the scientific research on the toxicity of the herbicide on the environment and amongst the Mexican population, the country’s leaders are paying urgent attention to the matter. Dr. Tello, Director General of Mexico’s Renewable Natural Resources sector, reiterated in a June 27, 2020, Sustainable Pulse article (3 minute read), Mexico Announces Phase-Out and Ban on Glyphosate Herbicides, that in the face of this problem we all have to act because, beyond productivity, there is human and environmental health. https://bit.ly/3b2kzrQ
KIDNEY BEANS! Originating from Peru more than 7,000 years ago, kidney beans have long been used as a source of plant-based protein. One of their main health benefits is its rich source of cholesterol-lowering fibre. The high fibre content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly, making these a good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance, or hypoglycemia. Their contribution to heart health is found not only in the fibre, but in the significant amounts of antioxidants, folic acid, vitamin B6, and magnesium. Jordana Hart CNP spills the beans on a hearty recipe that you won’t want to miss. http://ihartnutrition.com//09/red-kidney-bean-quinoa-salad/
How do urban farmers maximize space? They grow their crops vertically, some even without soil. This may sound like the answer to food security in big cities but, like any new process, there are some cons that outweigh the pros. In a Well article (6 minute read), Is Vertical Farming The Future Of Sustainable Food Sourcing? one expert reminds us that, the carbon footprint left by running one is unbelievably high. Ironically, we are bringing farming indoors to help the planet, but could running a vertical farm be doing more harm than good? https://bit.ly/VerticalFarmingSustainableWellOrg

Certified Nutritional Practitioners look for alternative ways to keep a healthy mind, body, spirit, and environment. When summer hits, we look for alternative measures to stay cool with hydrating drinks and cooling salads. Many of us have an appliance that we don’t realize is harming the planet. In a Well.org article (4 minute read), "Is Green Air Conditioning Possible, Or Even Necessary," writer Lucy Schlessinger reminds us that, air conditioning units, and electricity in general, release carbon dioxide emissions which trap heat in the environment. In summer the earth is warmer, so we turn on the AC, but the CO2 emitted only heats up the earth faster. Lucy has some alternative ways to keep cool and stay green, without harming the planet. https://bit.ly/GreenAirConditioningWellOrg
CAULIFLOWER! IHNers love to have cauliflower in their kitchens for its versatility. It can be used as an alternative for mashed potatoes, pasta, rice, and even chicken wings, appealing to those who enjoy grain-free and vegetarian options. The nutrition profile of cauliflower is quite impressive. It contains unique plant compounds that may reduce the risk of several diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Cauliflower is high in fibre, which feeds the healthy bacteria in the gut that helps reduce inflammation and promotes digestive health.
