Inglewood, established in 1875 as East Calgary, is Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood. It was named after the homestead of Colonel James Walker, a nearby resident of the area. With this distinction, there is a huge footprint of heritage and character buildings, from gorgeous Edwardian commercial buildings like the Burn Block, to community resource buildings like the Romanesque Revival East Calgary Telephone Exchange. The pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood has much to offer. Gear up for Jane's Walk weekend and explore Inglewood referencing this Walking Tour Map, Courtesy of Heritage Calgary.

As we lead up to Jane's Walk weekend next month, we wanted to share some self-guided walking tours to get you in the spirit! This one is courtesy of Fort Calgary. The land at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers has been a meaningful place for many peoples since time immemorial. This self-guided audio tour shares some of the significance of this place, past and present, to the Blackfoot, Tsuut’ina, and Métis Nations. As you walk around the site, you can listen to these tracks to learn about the layers of this place.

Over the last year, walking has become the perfect pandemic activity for many. Whether you walk for the health benefits, to complete a fake commute before you begin your at-home workday, or simply to leave your house or essential workplace and be in nature this year for Jane’s Walk, we will be inviting you to walk, wander and wonder about your usual route and to explore other parts of our shared city and beyond. Although we won't be gathering people to walk together this year, we will be sharing many ways to celebrate Jane’s Walk through challenges, resources, and other virtual activities. More information to come check back here and on https://www.janeswalk.calgaryfoundation.org for updates in the early spring!

Who is Jane Jacobs? With a keen eye for detail, she wrote eloquently about sidewalks, parks, retail design and self-organization. At the core of her work and thinking was the need to get out and walk your city and observe how people, through their actions and interactions, create communities with a strong sense of belonging.

Interview with Jane's Walk Leader Monika Smith on her walk, Glendale: Best Place to Call Home! 1. Please give a brief overview of the Jane’s Walk you led. I’ve lead Jane’s Walk for the past few years, which is a walk from our Community Hall in Glendale, along the southside back lane, across 45th Street SW into Glendale Park and through to the start of Optimist Park. I talk a bit about the history and background on the origins of this area, comparing it to what you see today. ... 2. What motivated you to lead a Jane’s Walk? Glendale/Glendale Meadows is a very beautiful community, a hidden treasure of middle-class homes and mainly RC1 properties. There are lots of trees, big green yards, a decent amount of biodiversity, and curvy roadsthe first in Calgary to introduce that feature. 3. Do you have any special memories from the walk you led? Last year, I mentioned Jane’s Walk to my German conversation instructor. By coincidence, her parents are from Germany (near Berlin) and were coming to visit her during this time. So, I invited them to join in. What an interesting conversation with all of the group regarding how Germany operates vs Calgary. They were gob smacked by the differences. As were we. There was also a thought to hold a Jane’s Walk by these visitors in their neighborhood in Germany. Read the full interview: https://buff.ly/3f7ajhx
