We like to think of New Year Resolutions like goals and whether you have them or not I think everyone agrees goals are important! We have some big and small ones this year and can't wait to start on them. Anyone out there have reducing waste as one of their 2021 goals? That's one of ours although hitting it remains elusive. Reducing waste is comparative depending on where you're starting and every little change makes a difference! So we are breaking it do...wn and focusing on a few areas to work on. For us, this year we are resolving to: *Not use any saran wrap instead switching to beeswax wraps, and reusable bags and containers *Upgrade our composter at the farm *Work with our suppliers to increase our bulk product offerings *Expand our product lines so we can offer you even more local and eco friendly products! In 2019 the average American used 260 plastic sandwich bags (as per @reducewastenow). I dislike using statistics from the US and assuming that they apply to us in Canada but with this one I'm fairly sure we can assume we are close to the same. Looking at the numbers, the population of Canada is roughly 37 million people which means if the average person uses 260 bags we are throwing out 3.6 billion bags per year. Yes this is all rough math but even if the ...number is half of that it is still mind blowing! What can we do to start to lower the number? Use reusable bags, tupperware containers, or reused food containers (think yogurt, sour cream, cottage cheese, margarine tubs, etc). Look around the house to see what you have and then make a list of what you may need. Refilling doesn't always mean you bring pretty jars into the store. For me today it meant bringing in an old Vaseline container that's been collecting dust for the last year and a Cheese Whiz container. I love the pump on the Vaseline jug so I'll be using it for my lotion until it breaks. And the Cheese Whiz jar is great for filling my smaller pump jars at home and storing the rest under the sink. When we first started down the path of opening a retail store the phrase that got tossed around a lot was "no waste" or "zero waste". I wanted to be upfront - we were not going to be (and are not) a zero waste store. Truthfully I don't even know how we would go about doing that. And never mind in the store, our lives are not zero waste. It is an unattainable goal for me (and many others) to think that I could go zero waste without drastically changing my life. ... At Jar'd we talk more about low waste. Little changes that add up to big things throughout your life. Maybe it's refilling your liquid hand soap, switching to shampoo bars, or buying your coffee beans in bulk. Don't underestimate the huge impact you are having by keeping an extra bag or plastic container out of the landfill every month. We're not perfect, there will always be times where we purchase an item that has more packaging than we thought it did, or go through drive-thru without our to-go mug (thanks COVID).
