A Tribute to Katrina This time last year I realized we were running precariously low on our Grapefruit Mint elixir so I ordered in several pounds of amazing quality mint from Twisted Brook farm then sent Katrina off to Sobeys to buy 72 grapefruits. Now, I did realize that 72 grapefruits were a lot of grapefruits, but I don't think it registered quite how many it was until Katrina returned about an hour later looking exhausted and shell-shocked apologizing that the wheel had... fallen of the pathetically light duty cart I'd sent her off to the store with! She'd arrived at the store pulling a cart made of one of those flimsy frames that Superstore sells, with a laundry basket lashed to it with bungey cords (only receptacle big enough) then stood at the grapefruit stand carefully checking that each grapefruit had the perfect zesting surface before placing them into her laundry basket on wheels. This initially only caused a few funny looks from the staff but apparently after pretty much clearing out the entire grapefruit display (except for a few lumpy rejects) she had to ask the produce manager if he had any more and at that point other customers started to look nervous. She soldiered on and made it through to the cash register where she verified that, yes indeed she did have 72 grapefruits in her laundry basket contraption and then headed back to the kitchen. En route the cart slowly gave up the will to live. One of the rubber tires fell off, the other wheel started to buckle and she nearly dumped the lot out somewhere on Inglis Street where she hit a bump. Katrina is one of those incredibly contained people so she kept going on despite the indignities that I was putting her though then, on arrival, calmly summarized her monty python-esque adventure while I violently shook from laughing so hard. Amazingly she stuck around to zest and juice the 72 grapefruit and strip and steep the several pounds of fresh mint. The kitchen filled up with the most incredible smell and I still believe that that was the only reason that she didn't strike me down that day for being the WORST BOSS EVER! The next time, I took the car. See more
