Extra! Extra! Thirty-five years ago today, Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House opened it’s doors. Since then, we have served guests from all over the world, shucked millions of oysters, cooked thousands of steaks, and opened too many bottles of wine to count. Here’s a look at our opening announcement and our first ever menu! #Joes35Years

Culinary Throwbacks Our culinary mission has always been to provide a classic seafood & steakhouse cuisine, made with the finest ingredients from the Pacific Northwest. That still rings true today. Even with the menu changes that have taken place throughout the years, there are a few items that have stood the test of time and remain our signature Joe’s dishes: the chilled seafood platter, miso marinated sablefish and hearty fish & chips to name a few. Our goal for this year and beyond is to continue to provide our guests with a dynamic culinary experience. Take a look through some of our culinary throwbacks! What are some of your favourite items today? Which ones would you like to see make a comeback? #Joes35Years

Old Landscapes While we are known for our classic & old-school steakhouse look, some of our dining areas have gone through changes over the decades. The most significant upgrade has been to our Rooftop Garden, which was fully renovated in 2008. You’ll also find photos of our Atrium, which was a fully-private dining space for groups that was repurposed in 2009. Swipe through to go back in time! Can you point out the most notable changes? We also included a bonus photo of our little corner, Robson and Thurlow, from the 1950s. #Joes35Years

This year, we are honoured to be celebrating our 35th anniversary. While we can’t truly celebrate the way we had hoped, we will be taking time this week to highlight some of our Joe’s history and remember a few moments that have led us to where we are today. Starting with the man himself, our namesake, Seraphim Joe Fortes. Joe was a legendary figure in early Vancouver history after his arrival in 1885. Joe filled various community roles: chaperone, volunteer and was ultimat...ely named Vancouver’s first official lifeguard. He was credited with saving countless lives and teaching hundreds of others how to swim. Joe was loved by all who knew him as he embodied the values of service, kindness, and modesty. When he passed in 1922, Vancouver held the longest funeral procession to-date. A hundred years after his arrival in Vancouver, Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House opened on November 12, 1985. #Joes35Years

Since reopening our doors in May, the health and safety of our staff and guests has been our top priority. In compliance with Dr. Bonnie Henry’s public health orders, we are operating at a reduced capacity with reduced hours, and ensuring social distancing is being adhered to by staff and guests alike. We have taken additional precautions by requiring all staff to wear face masks, installing plexiglass barriers in our dining areas, and maintaining our already rigorous hygiene and cleaning standards. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to keep hosting you in a safe & enjoyable dining environment.
