Welcome to week two of Freestyle Friday! The weather was absolutely perfect for Tod Mountain’s first Freestyle Skiing competition in March 1976, and local crowds turned out in record numbers to see the skiers perform. This competitor is working hard to win over the crowd, as he waves to them during his ski ballet (also known as acroski) routine. Ski Ballet was one event where music was part of the skier’s routine. We wonder what song his performance was choreographed to, as a... good song choice sure would have gotten the crowd’s, and the judge’s, attention. City of Kamloops Arts and Culture Coordinator, Cara G., is pretty sure it’s something by the Doobie Brothers. Happy birthday to Andrew Noble, who was born on this day in 1845. Noble came to the Kamloops area in the late 1880s, and became one of the many Kamloops business owners to establish a Block to house shops on Victoria Street other notables being John Freemont Smith, F. Godman (later bought by Fuoco), and W.O. Ellis. Noble’s block has been the home of many businesses over the years, from bookstores to coffee shops, and is a nice reminder during the holiday season to shop local! #yka #ykahistory #kamloops #kamloopsmuseumandarchives #cdnhistory #canadianhistory #visitanddiscover #cdnheritage #canadianheritage #everyplaceastory #celebratehistory #superculturalBC #thenandnow #tbt #throwback #shoplocal

Season of cheer and giving, Western Karate Academy is one of many of Kamloops’ community organizations that raised funds, and 2005 was no exception. Students Navreen and Leith track the club’s progress for the academy’s contribution towards the Daily News Christmas Cheer Fund. Funds raised in the 2005 annual drive were split between the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House, the YMCA-YWCA women’s emergency shelter, and the New Life Mission (now the Mustard Seed) going straight back to supporting the Kamloops community. Did you grow too many pumpkins this year? Is your freezer full of pumpkin puree? Going through the KMA Cookbook collection, we found a Pumpkin Loaf recipe from the Kamloops Art Gallery Cookbook - Eat Your Art Out ca. 1986. This is an easy recipe to make a loaf or muffins and even tweak to be your own with nuts and different spices. #yka #ykahistory #kamloops #kamloopsmuseumandarchives #cdnhistory #canadianhistory #visitanddiscover #cdnheritage #canadianheritage #everyplaceastory #celebratehistory #superculturalBC #historicalrecipes

When the Battle Street Cenotaph was originally unveiled in 1925 it had electric streetlights to light up the site, and canons standing guard During World War II these decorative elements were removed from Memorial Hill Park to aid the war effort, due to the shortage of supplies. The site is now ringed with flowers in the warmer months that are carefully tended by City of Kamloops horticulturists, vintage-inspired wrought iron fencing, and stone benches, and at night is lit up by recessed lighting. #yka #ykahistory #kamloops #kamloopsmuseumandarchives #cdnhistory #canadianhistory #visitanddiscover #cdnheritage #canadianheritage #everyplaceastory #celebratehistory #superculturalBC #thenandnow #tbt #throwback #throwbackthursday #remembranceday #cenotaph

During a sombre ceremony student Binyan Asress plays the horn to accompany a veteran’s speech. Don’t forget us. Remember who we are, and why we fought for you, said Bill Doggert in a moving speech delivered during the 2002 Remembrance Day events at UCC. Wise words which echo down the years, as we one again ready to pay tribute to our servicemen and -women in ceremonies tomorrow. Amid the Autumn winds of change, Kamloopsians headed to the ballot box during the November of 1999 and elected a City Council full of fresh faces - including new Mayor Mel Rothenburger. Like all new city councils, we’re sure this bunch were ready to get to work and shake up Kamloops for their constituents! This classic Daffy is brought to you by our new mini series: Freestyle Friday with Fedorak Photo! According to photographer Allan Fedorak, who captured these quintessentially ‘70s colours in March 1976, this was the first Freestyle Skiing competition at Tod Mountain (now Sun Peaks). The event featured Aerial Skiing and Ski Ballet (Acroski), just two of the six events we are used to seeing now. Often when we explore the history of soldiers we are shown formal regimental photographs, and the focus remains on their time served battles fought, medals awarded, and whether they lived or died on the front lines. Yet, before they enlisted to serve their country, all these young men (and women in more recent conflicts) lived the lives of ordinary people in their hometowns and had deep community connections. When we were researching the history of soldiers from Kamloops w...ho are honoured on the Battle Street Cenotaph we came across this photograph of the Kamloops Baseball Team from 1911. This image shows Corporal Leo Alphonsus Smith (standing, third from left), who died on September 2nd, 1918 after serving overseas with the 54th Battalion of the Canadian Infantry. Instead of showing Smith in his regimental uniform, this image gives rise to more personal questions about Smith (and his comrades in arms) and shows him as part of the Kamloops sporting community. Delving deeper into his history we discovered that Smith attended Kamloops High School and began working at the Inland Sentinel shortly thereafter and became a member of the Typographical Union. Like many of the young men who enlisted, served, and died overseas during the Great War, Smith’s story is one of many that shook the Kamloops community. From little sailor boy to soldier, Sydney Amyas Winterbottom (1896-1917) was one of two sons from the Winterbottom family to serve in the military. Here we see him (left), alongside sister Helen, captured at the youthful age of 4 1/2 by well-known Kamloops photographer Mary Spencer. Sydney worked with his father Arthur to help run the Noble Ranch and the West End Dairy, and was active in the local boxing community before enlisting with the 11th Canadian Mounted Rifles in 1915.... His unit saw action in the battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, where he lost his life. Sydney is commemorated on the Battle Street Cenotaph in Kamloops for his service. Ski season officially started during this week in 1961, when Tod Mountain (now Sun Peaks) opened its newly developed trails for the first time on November 18th! We can see from these images that over the years the mountain has seen a fairly constant increase in trail numbers, sometimes experiencing growth amid controversy. We’re sure our local skiers and clubs are anxiously awaiting more snowfall on the slopes, as opening day for Sun Peaks is once again just around the corner.... The first week of November is an auspicious time in the history of North Kamloops. After seeing an increase in residential settlement as land was slowly parceled off by B.C. Fruitlands Company, the Village of North Kamloops was formally incorporated on November 1, 1946. The Village would run independently for the next 21 years, until it was amalgamated with the City of Kamloops on November 4, 1967. With an increase of residential and business opportunities in the area not t...o mention its trendy new branding as The Shore - we’re sure that the neighbourhood tucked into the bend of the Thompson River is sure to flourish in the years to come. #yka #ykahistory #kamloops #kamloopsmuseumandarchives #cdnhistory #canadianhistory #visitanddiscover #cdnheritage #canadianheritage #everyplaceastory #celebratehistory #thenandnow #tbt #throwback #throwbackthursday #nsbia #theshore

Members of the Mount Paul Skating Club were getting ready to hit the ice and dance, on this day in 1967, as they prepared to travel to Vernon for the Okanagan-Mainline Championships. The skating club was originally established in the 1940s, with the goal of providing basic and advanced skating lessons for children and adults, and sent members to competitions throughout the province. World War I saw the introduction of aerial warfare, opening up new avenues of strategy, reconnaissance, and combat. Norman Stuart Harper (1892-1918), a young man from Kamloops who served with the 99th Squadron of the Royal Air Force, would be trained to fly a de Havilland DH.9 aircraft. But before Harper took to the skies, he flew in another wayacross the dance floors of Kamloops as a highland dancer (pictured left)! Harper, pictured left, grew up to be involved with the Kam...loops sporting community and worked as a bank clerk. Prior to enlisting in 1916, Harper was also active in the Rocky Mountain Rangers alongside his father, businessman Major James Milne Harper. Harper’s plane was shot down over Lahr, Germany during a bombing raid in 1918, and he was buried with full military honours by the Germans.
