A throwback to 2015, Amanda and I at the Medicine Hat trade show!

In today's world, majority of the business related social media posts are sales pitches and product promotion. One thing I like to do every now and again, is give my followers, customers and friends some real life behind the scenes action, and share pictures and a story to go with it. Things don't always run smoothly and according to plan. It's the problems and challenges that keep things exciting and always new things to learn along the way. We did plumbing for a new hom...e build for our customers/friends/neighbors, Kevin and Janae. We installed a Noritz combi unit back in the summer and we got a call about a leak. I went to check it out and had found the heat exchanger was leaking. Called Noritz tech support and they sent a new one out to us under warranty. Installing one of these heaters is newer territory for us and neither my staff or I have ever dived onto major repairs on one of these units. I called in my friend Dave with DJ Plumbing and Gasfitting to assist with the repairs to make sure it was done right. The procedure wasn't as bad as I had anticipated and in less than 2 hours we had the new heat exchanger installed, the unit back together and the machine back in service. A big shout out to Dave from DJ Plumbing and Gasfitting for assisting with the repairs. Like I've said before, it's great to have a great friendship and buisiness relationship with the local competition. Plumbing/gasfitting, like most trades have a lot of different areas to them and there's always new things to learn. One area which I personally don't have alot of experience in, is infloor heating. We installed a Noritz Combi unit back in August on a new house build for a customer with the plans of future in floor heat. The time has come and the customer decided to go ahead with it. This is a new area I want to gain more knowledge and experience in and called Frasers... Plumbing and Gasfitting in to assist with the project. All in one day, we were able to get everything tied in and installed, and ready to be wired and put to use. This system has two zones, garage and basement, and utilizes its advanced technology to take care of both domestic water and inslab in the same unit. A big thank you to Matt and Art Fraser from Frasers Plumbing and Gasfitting for not only coming to do the work, but to let me work along side and taking the time to train me as we went. Its great that we live and work in a community where the competition can get along and work together to help eachother out. (We will be diving more into details and the pros and cons of this combi unit at a later date so stay tuned!)

Customer appreciation post: Yesterday, I had a service call come in from long time customer, Steve. They found a leak at his son Tyler's house and after removing drywall to investigate, they found that the drain for the kitchen sink had split. The interesting part of this, and why I posted this, is how hot water mixed with some house settling can create brittle and cracked pipe. We come across this often but not usually down the entire vertical section of the pipe. (Picture...s in comments) Steve and Maureen Risling have been long term clients of ours. In our first year of business, Steve called me in for a service call at his home. They were one of our first random customers who called us in who weren't family or friends. Ever since then, Steve has brought us in when he's needed some extra assistance and has referred us to lots of other people at the fire department who have also turned into long term customers as well. Thank you Steve, Maureen and family for the continued support over the years!!

Yesterday, I went to do a kitchen sink and faucet install for a customer. One of the requests he had, was to clean up the plumbing underneath the sink area. When I arrived on site, I instantly seen what he was talking about. Its amazing what alot of us have pieced together that's "been there for years " and luckily haven't caused any issues. Friday emergency service call turned into a water heater swap out. Currently we are getting ready to pull out this old 15 year old Bradford White and install it with this shiny new John Wood.

We have missed the last couple of tool Tuesdays mostly due to being booked up solid these last 2 weeks. First of all, I'd like to say thank you for the support! Secondly, I'd like to feature our new Dewalt laser level for #tooltuesday this week. This is a tool we never thought we had much need for until a past employee (Pete) had told us about the many uses it has in commercial plumbing and about all the uses in residential plumbing as well. So far the primary uses for us ...are for snapping a straight line for drilling multiple holes, and getting clean out height for under slab rough ins. A much shorter, more simple #tooltuesday today. For most plumbers who work in service or residential renovations, the less tools to carry around the lighter the tool bag is. Each tool has a specific and unique job. This 1/2 inch ratchet wrench is about as simple as it gets but has a very specific purpose. In addition to general nuts or bolts that require a half inch wrench, we at KAT Plumbing use this specifically for tightening down toilet bolts and some styles of sink fauce...ts. The ratchet end makes it fast and easy for any toilets with limited bolt access. Today on #tooltuesday, the next tool we are featuring is the Ridgid K-400 drain cleaner. This is another piece of equipment we use on a regular basis and one that our customers ask alot of questions about. This is also the first piece of drain cleaning equipment ever purchased by KAT Plumbing. This machine has a few different attachments for it, and can handle 3 inch and 4 inch mains in residential and light commercial. The tree root cutter attachment can fit through roots ...and any tough challenges it may find. We use the retrieval attachment if we are trying to pull something out of the sewer lines such as a rag for example. The K-400 has a 75 ft long, 1/2 inch thick cable and runs on foot operated air switch. We find the smaller cable needs to be replaced more often and increases our maintence costs a little bit, but we have alot better results going through floor drain p traps and tighter fittings with the smaller cable verses the thicker cable. With all the covid stuff going on, we thought we would keep some positive stuff flowing, and continue on with #tooltuesday. The tool we are featuring today is a pipe threader. This one is a ridgid 300. Threaders are used in residential, commercial and industrial plumbing We previously owned this model but sold it when we upgraded to the mega press. There are many benefits to threading pipe. In our opinion, low material cost is the number 1 benefit. There are also a wide ran...ge of different fittings. Threaded fittings can easily be disassembled with pipe wrenches to make changes or additions to the piping system. Labour intensive, machine heavy and awkward, and oil can be messy, are some of the disadvantages of threading pipe. The pipe threader (whether manual or power) has a cutter, reemer and the die head. The die has to be adjusted regularly for accurate threads. There are many other brands, models and styles. This is just one example. Although a few minutes late on #tooltuesday, heres a machine we also bought last year. The Milwaukee M12 drain auger. This machine has a 25 ft cable with a swivel head on it, and cordless for convenience. It also has a completely enclosed housing to contain mess in the customers house. This unit may be small, but has enough torque to tackle any pipes up to 2 inch. We use this one for tub, shower and sink drains. Its smaller cable and swivel head allows ease around tight fit...tings and p traps. To kick off our first #tooltuesday , I thought we would start big, and open up with a new tool we bought last year. This tool is called a Mega Press, and is designed to press fit black iron gas pipe. This machine can also crimp copper pipe with pro press jaws, but we havent added that to the tool yet. We have had alot of customers ask us about this machine since we got it. For us, this unit takes place of our pipe threader we used to have. The fittings are significantly more ...money than threaded, but the same job can be done typically in less than half the time. We recently did some plumbing work on a small renovation at my inlaws house. Previously in their ensuite bathroom, they had a jet tub and small corner shower and we removed the shower, relocated the toilet, and installed a 60" by 34" 4 piece shower kit with a chrome Maax 2 panel door. Sink is an American standard semi-recessed sink, Gerber viper seried lav faucet and Gerber Avalanche toilet. Our main supplier, Bartle and Gibson in Medicine Hat has most of these items in stock and always have good quality products. Thank you to our family for their business and support!
