LIVE: Health Minister Tyler Shandro will outline Alberta's plan for deployment of the first Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccines, followed by an update from Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw

Glad to hear that Health Canada has approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for use. As soon as the vaccine is delivered to Alberta, we are ready with the plan and the team to deploy it to those most in need. No vaccine will be mandatory in Alberta, but we will be strongly encouraging all Albertans get immunized and help us all protect one another.

We lost a great Albertan five years ago today. Manmeet Bhullar was larger than life, with a heart for others and a deep spirit of public service. We miss you, friend. His legacy continues, with a school, park, scholarships and awards named after him. Legislation will be introduced to also name his former constituency after him.

Today, Alberta is moving ahead with stronger public health measures. Like nearly everywhere else in the western world, we are experiencing a surge in hospitalizations and ICU admissions. The simple reality is, if we don't stop this surge, our system will be overwhelmed. These are not decisions taken lightly especially at this time of year. Not only will these restrictions mean financial hardship for many Albertans , they will keep us apart during the Christmas holidays a...Continue reading

Small and medium sized businesses are the backbone of Alberta’s economy, and they've been hit hard by the coronavirus recession. Alberta's government will be there to help these job creators that have lost revenue due to impacts from COVID-19 health measures, with grants to support them financially through this challenging time. Businesses will be able to apply in the coming days, with two application phases beginning now.... For more details on applying: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm

Domestic and international Hydrogen production has the potential to be worth $100 billion or more, and our province has a chance to get in on it. We have an abundant natural gas resource, a skilled workforce with experience in the oil and gas industry, and a spirit of innovation and determination that never quits. With the possibility of billions in royalties and thousands of new jobs, Alberta is ready to jump on being a big player in the hydrogen marketplace.

Before Mike Ellis entered elected politics as the MLA for Calgary-West, he served as a sergeant in the Calgary Police Service for 12 years. Here is his take on the 'defund the police' nonsense: "Officers are community leaders who bridge gaps with new Canadians. They are role models for children in schools, help vulnerable people and protect communities from predatory gang activity.... Police officers are the first people we call when dangerous scenarios arise. The men and women of the police service risk their lives every day they put on their uniforms. They work with other first responders, like paramedics, firefighters and social workers to secure the scene and allow others to do their work. Our police officers are a necessary part of a continuum of public safety. Some members of Calgary city council have defended their defund rhetoric with semantic games. As a fellow public servant and former police officer, I find these gimmicks to be disrespectful to the intelligence of voters. I also know that this has had a demoralizing effect on our women and men in uniform. The honourable thing to do would be for those council members to admit that they were wrong and vote against the divisive rhetoric of defund the police.

Cutting red tape saves money and creates jobs! Alberta is on track to cut 670,977 regulations by one-third to supercharge the economy and create thousands of jobs. So far, we have cut more than 6%, or 45,886 unnecessary requirements, moving three times faster than BC and Manitoba in their first year of red tape reduction.... This is saving Albertans $476 million and a heck of a lot of time. And we want your help to keep it going! If you know about a requirement that is outdated, duplicative or wasteful, email your ideas for future red tape reduction to [email protected] Read more: https://www.alberta.ca/release.cfm

The cost of treatment for those living with addictions has been an overwhelming financial barrier for too many Alberta families. No longer. Alberta has removed these fees so that recovery is accessible to everyone who needs it. "The relief for families will be life-changing. Removing these fees means families will no longer have to choose between putting their kids in hockey or dance and accessing life-saving treatment.... This will open pathways to health and wellness for people who may never have dreamed recovery was possible for them. Addiction does not discriminate, and neither does recovery. Recovery is for everyone and now everyone can access it."

Jason Kenney 06.10.2020

Good interview with former Calgary Police Service officer Mike Ellis on this "defund the police" nonsense. "Ellis, a United Conservative member of the legislature, sees this as bandwagon-jumping after the protests earlier this year. Ellis says the city has no plan. They do not know what they hope to achieve. There is a lack of understanding or even willingness to understand what the Calgary Police Service is and what we have done.... Ellis puts it in his no-nonsense lingo. When folks call 911 they want the police to show up. They don’t want to hear about some nonsensical no-plan debate by uninformed individuals on the Calgary city council. Ellis represents west Calgary and he says there isn’t some mysterious groundswell of support for defunding police in the western suburbs. This is no surprise."

Glad to see construction about to kickoff on major renovations at Calgary's Peter Lougheed Centre, creating 770 construction jobs. Upgrades include: - 15 more beds in the emergency department. - Two new trauma areas.... - Intake area increased from six to 26 spaces. - An ambulance drop-off area closer to emergency department. - Mental health short-stay unit expanded. - Replacement laboratory space for state-of-the-art diagnostic services. These major upgrades will help boost the quality of patient care offered at the PLC, while creating hundreds of jobs when we need them most. This is part of Alberta's Recovery Plan to build, diversify, and create jobs now.

With political staff taking a 7% pay cut, Alberta’s government is ready to lead by example and do what the public expects of us when so many Albertans are making less or have lost jobs. Last year, our MLAs took a voluntary 5% pay cut, and I took a 10% cut that's on top of a 5% pay cut for Alberta MLAs under Jim Prentice’s government in 2014. Both of these cuts were made under conservative governments, not under the NDP. We are all in this together. We’re in for a tough ride, but we will get our finances in order, emerging out of the crisis stronger than ever.

Since its launch on November 2, Alberta’s COVID testing pilot at the YYC Calgary International Airport and the Coutts land border crossing has had 1,993 participants. This border testing prioritizes health and safety while lowering the disruption to people's lives and our economy. We plan to expand it to the Edmonton International Airport early in 2021.

Alberta has what it takes to be a world leader in blue hydrogen production. Developing this industry's potential is a key part of Alberta’s Recovery Plan and our Natural Gas Strategy, helping diversify our energy sector and create thousands of new jobs. Alberta is already a major producer of grey hydrogen, used for industrial processes such as in bitumen upgrading, oil refining and chemical production. It is fortunate to have an opportunity to transition to production of blue hydrogen produced from natural gas via steam methane reforming with the produced CO2 permanently sequestered at very low cost relative to most other jurisdictions.

LIVE: Albertas response to the federal governments Speech from the Throne

Jason Kenney 22.09.2020

Alberta has been there for Canada. During an economic emergency, Canada must have our back. The federal government must treat the crisis in Alberta’s oil and gas sector as it would treat a crisis in Central Canada’s automotive or manufacturing sector. No matter how you slice it, Canada’s oil and natural gas sector has been one of the nation’s most significant contributors to jobs, gross domestic product (GDP) and tax revenues over the decades. Even in down years, such as 201...6, the oil and gas extraction sector (including conventional and oilsands, but not pipelines) was twice the size of the automotive sector as a percentage of nominal GDP. It was four times the size of the aerospace industry. In 2016, the oil and gas sector employed over 200,000 Canadians and paid average weekly earnings that were 172 per cent higher than the all-industry average ($2,727 weekly versus $1,001). Most people are likely aware that Albertans are the largest net contributors to federal finances through federal taxes paid by individuals and companies. Three University of Calgary economists pegged the average annual figure between 1961 and 2018 at $3,700 per Albertan. (Ontario was next at $1,267 per capita with British Columbia at $603 per person.) What most Canadians may not be aware of is how much of Alberta’s net contribution comes from the oil and gas extraction sector. Using data from Statistics Canada, we added up the corporate and personal income taxes paid by the sector between 2007 and 2018. The conservative estimate of just direct taxes from oil and gas extraction was nearly $50 billion.

Alberta is disappointed that instead of listening to Canadas provinces, the federal government doubled down on policies that will kill jobs, make Canada poorer and weaken national unity. Last week, I was joined by Premiers Ford, Legault and Pallister in Ottawa to speak on behalf of Canadas provinces. We made it clear that the provinces are united in their priorities: healthcare and the economy. The speech we heard today was anything but. Earlier today, Statistics Canada sho...wed the steepest decline ever for jobs in the resource sector 43,000 people lost their good-paying jobs. Every one of these jobs lost represents a family that is disrupted, the uncertainty of how to pay bills or a mortgage, and questions about how folks are going to get food on the table. In a 6783 word Throne Speech, not one word recognized the crisis facing Canadas largest industry the energy sector that supports 800,000 jobs, directly and indirectly. Instead, we got a litany of policies that would strangle investment and jeopardize resource jobs when we most need the industry that generates 20 per cent of government revenues in Canada. I want to be clear: its not just Albertas energy sector that needs Canada right now. For a real recovery, Canada needs Albertas energy. Albertans have made a net contribution of more than $600 billion through transfers to the rest of Canada to build roads, schools, hospitals and the critical infrastructure Canadians need, in large part due to Alberta's energy industry. And even conservative estimates from experts and economists show the global demand for oil increasing over the next 20 years. What that means is that Alberta's energy sector will remain a vital part of Canada's economy for generations to come. But, for that to happen, the federal government must first do no harm. Thats why today we are fighting the constitutional Trojan horse of the federal carbon tax at the Supreme Court of Canada, and why we will be in court to fight the No More Pipelines Bill C-69 in the coming weeks. Alberta has never asked for a handout. Instead, we are merely asking for the federal government to support our province in the same way that Alberta has supported Canada for generations. The first thing they can do is hit the pause button on policies that unfairly and unconstitutionally target the economic engine of Canada. The next thing they can do is to demonstrate real support for Alberta by recognizing the fiscal calamity we face with the collapse of provincial revenue by living up to the original intent of the fiscal stabilization program and giving Alberta back $6.5 billion less than one per cent of what Alberta has contributed to Canada. All 13 provinces and territories have recognized this as a national priority. Its regrettable that the national government has not.

A heartwarming story of giving to fulfill Korinda’s last wish Korinda Kostiw died on Sept. 18, after a five-year battle with breast cancer. In lieu of flowers, the 34-year-old asked for toys and donations to be made to 630 CHED Santas Anonymous. Instead of worrying about eating or getting out of bed, she was worried about kids getting presents for Christmas, her husband, Dustin said Tuesday.... Korinda frequently volunteered with Santas and considered it her favourite charity. What started as a few presents dropped off at the family’s home quickly filled the driveway. I got my trailer ready and after a few weeks the trailer was completely full, Dustin said. We thought there was just going to be a few toys. I was not expecting $20,000 worth of toys. The donations started coming in from other provinces, just all over the place. They all said they want to make a donation in memory of Korinda, Janine Foote with Santas said.

A big part of diversifying Albertas economy, and building on the foundation of our resource industry, is developing our vast untapped geological potential. Albertas Minerals Strategy will focus on lithium, vanadium, uranium, and rare earth elements - needed for batteries, cell phones, energy cells, and many other products. As an example of the vast potential we have, E3 metals announced they expect to create 300-500 full-time jobs by 2023 from a facility in the Leduc Reser...voir Region. Companies like this that build on the backbone of our energy industry will position our economy for future growth!

The Alberta Court of Appeal correctly dubbed the Trudeau Carbon Tax a "constitutional Trojan horse" which contemplates a wholesale takeover of a collection of clear provincial jurisdictions and rights. Wishing a happy retirement to Russ Girling whose decade of leadership brought TC Energy to success through the uncertain times and great adversity. Alberta is very fortunate to have an abundance of oil and gas, but natural resources lead to shared prosperity only through hard work and focused leadership. TC Energy has played a big role in shaping Albertas energy industry, creating billions in wealth and thousands of jobs for Alberta and for the rest of Canada.... With a historic $1.5 billion investment in Keystone XL, a vitally important project, Albertas government will make sure that our oil can get to market and our people can get a fair value for our natural resources.

Jason Kenney 06.06.2020

Alberta’s oil and gas industry is at the forefront of research and innovation. With digital tech and marvels of engineering like horizontal drilling, improved efficiency and reduced emissions are today’s reality. As oil and gas will be a part of the global energy supply for decades to come, Alberta is ready to use cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art technology to supply energy to the world. As this article puts it,... If you think the oil and gas industry is going to allow itself to be made obsolete by renewables and the energy transition, think again. Smart people are innovating in every industry in order to be able to thrive in a low-carbon world.

"It didnt need to be this way. Trudeau could have put national unity first and his green scheme agenda second. It was obvious from the get-go that this would be a long battle. If Trudeau had simply taken the high road and walked away, he could have saved us this prolonged conflict. Its also a telling coincidence that the top court is hearing this case on the same week as the Throne Speech, where the Liberals are expected to put forward an even more ambitious green agenda.... Why are they barreling ahead with even more potentially divisive green projects when the courts havent even weighed in on the constitutionality of their previous ones?"

Alberta taxpayers have contributed more than $600 billion net to the rest of Canada. We don't begrudge this - we're proud to have played a nation-building role when the country needed us. "Alberta and Ontario, both with conservative premiers, have taken entirely different approaches when it comes to managing the COVID-19 outbreak. Premier Jason Kenney said this week that he is getting blasted from both sides: those who say he has gone too far on restrictions and those who say hes not gone far enough. But he defends his approach saying 85% of Albertas economy remained open during the peak of the pandemic, we have the least number of restrictions in all of Can...ada, the least in North America, with the exception of South Dakota, and when you add in Europe, only Sweden has been more free. Indeed, Sweden seems to have defied the dire predictions of the commentariat and, aside from the early misstep of failing to protect seniors in nursing homes, appears on its way to herd immunity without rigid lockdowns, mandatory masks or school closures. Deaths in Sweden peaked in late April and have been in the single digits since mid-July. Canadas outbreak has followed the same trend. The peak came in May but weve had single-digit deaths reported daily for most of the last month and Canada reported no deaths on Sept. 10 for the first time since March. Kenney has repeatedly put to rest the idea that Alberta will go back into lockdown or that schools will be closed."

"What Kenney wants is reverse equalization for the tough times Alberta has faced. The number crunchers say thats $6.5 billion, about $4 billion of it for this year alone and the rest for the last five years since the oil price crash. Kenneys journey to Ottawa, the belly of the beast, is happening as theres chatter about Prime Minister Justin Trudeaus possible designs to screw over Alberta even more.... Last week, Kenney chinwags with Dominic LeBlanc, a Trudeau sidekick. If this stuff means you guys are going to take the oil and gas sector, which is on its knees, and try to decapitate it, its going to be a full-on war, Kenney tells LeBlanc. ... You have to think. Why are they doing this to us? Why does Alberta wear the Kick Me sign? Kenney points to influential, detached-from-reality Liberals in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa. They seem to live in this fantasy world where they imagine you can just flick a switch, turn off oil and gas and maintain a prosperous, modern economy. It is irrational. It is deeply ideological. It is thinking belonging in a first-year college seminar room, not around a federal cabinet table. Kenney goes east. He thinks of his old school, Notre Dame in Wilcox, Sask., and its motto: Struggle and Emerge. It applies to this battle. Were going to fight as hard as we can and we will emerge, one way or the other.

When each new year begins, the Jewish people hope it will be filled with the same sweetness as the apples and honey traditionally eaten on this day. The pandemics effects might seem to offer reasons for despair, but history has taught the Jewish people over generations that many years lack sweetness. These experiences do not diminish their trust in God or the renewed optimism with which they greet every year. Strength, patience and courage have seen them through hard times b...efore and will again. I wish Jewish Albertans all the comforts and happiness of their faith, their cultures and their sense of community. Their ideals and compassion, shared so generously with everyone around them, will lift up our province as we recover and rebuild. Lshanah tovah!

With a surge in the use of face shields, plexiglass barriers, and other protective equipment pieces these days, the world is realizing the importance of plastics - all of it made possible by our petrochemicals sector. Manufacturing of protective equipment is just the tip of the iceberg of Albertas multi-billion dollar plastics industry, a sector that is continuously improving its record on sustainability.

Good news for Alberta. Despite this year's championship looking a bit different, Edmonton will still host this year's IIHF World Junior Championship in the ICE District bubble at Rogers Place. And for the 2022 World Juniors the year following, Edmonton and Red Deer will co-host with spectators, per the original plan for this year.... Thanks to the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) for choosing our province!

A big part of Alberta's Recovery Plan is launching Albertas Investment and Growth Strategy to drive investment back into our province and create jobs. Todays announcement is just the start of our plan to make Alberta the best destination for businesses to invest in the world. We will do this by building on our foundational industries, like energy, tourism, and agriculture, while supporting growth in new and emerging sectors.... Alberta can and will be a global leader in technology and innovation, helping drive growth in every part of our economy and creating thousands of new jobs. https://www.alberta.ca/announcements.cfm

Good to see Frog Lake First Nation Chief Greg Desjarlais and many other Indigenous leaders support greater participation in the responsible development and transportation of our resources. When we can be partners in economic growth, it means more self-sufficiency, independence, and a chance for Indigenous people to move from poverty to prosperity!

There seems to exist a fantasy world, inhabited by people on the radical left who think that we can leave our oil in the ground, and the globe will magically fuel and power itself. In the real world, we know our modern industrial economy needs oil and gas to survive. And let's be clear, because the world needs oil and gas, leaving Alberta's oil in the ground only means one thing: more foreign oil, and less of our oil.... Alberta's responsibly-produced energy has an environmental footprint per barrel that continues to shrink. It creates jobs and puts food on table for hundreds of thousands of families. As global demand recovers, Alberta should be the supplier of choice for the energy the world needs.
