: Welcome back to my #SopikSpotlight, where I feature my children and the parenting strategies I have learned over the years! As I mentioned in my last post, it has been incredibly interesting for me to watch my children grow into adults. When I reflect back on those years, knowing what I know now, I realize that so many of the challenges I faced when parenting each child came from not truly knowing or understanding their unique personalities. Tori is my f...ifth child, my second daughter. Recently 29 years old, she is an incredibly accomplished, successful young woman. She is definitely my most educated, academic child, with nearly four post-graduate degrees (a BSc in Biology, MSc in Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Masters of Management in Artificial Intelligence, and soon to be Ph.D. in Medical Science) and already an impressive resume as a young cancer researcher . What was she like as a little girl? Intense and introspective. She was thinking all of the time. When she was just five, she would lay in bed with me at night and ask me, why does everyone have to die? She wasn’t satisfied until I alleviated her concerns (this was no easy task!) She never wanted to go to school because it wasn’t interesting to her. She was so bored that it caused her anxiety and frequent stomach aches. She skipped grade 2, and went to an IB school, and was still unhappy. What did I do? Anything I could but it was only when she was really intellectually challenged that she would be slightly content. I spent a fair bit of time trying to convince her to be like the other kids, enjoy her friends and being a teenager, etc. When she started skipping most of her high school classes her principal gave me some interesting advice. She said, Just let her be. She is capable of doing well without going to class and the power struggle isn’t worth it. ... . On a world stage, Kamala's election serves as a moment of inspiration and hope for women of colour, particularly young girls. At Kids & Company, we are proud to have two powerful woman leaders, our co-founders Victoria Sopik and Jennifer Nashmi.
