Kindred Home Care 07.06.2021

Meet the Caregiver: Hi my name is Ashley Fleming and I am a PCA for Kindred Home Care. When I made the choice to enter into the home care community last year, I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but I was excited about the opportunity! Looking back, I have always been eager to reach out a helping hand whenever the chance comes up so, starting a position where it was my job to do exactly that was definitely a welcome change of pace! Going to work every day and actively im...proving the lives of people who are facing such unique challenges, is in and of itself a very rewarding experience. I have built relationships with dynamic and spirited individuals who continue to teach me and add color to my world each and every time I visit. The management/scheduling team at Kindred is very supportive and always works hard to see that everyone’s needs are met to the best of their ability. Being able to achieve the right work/life balance was key for me when accepting this role and I am always grateful for the hard work that is done to make sure that this can happen.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed our lives in many ways, our need for connection and care remains the same. The Department of Social Development’s Social Supports website has new guidebooks with great wellness tips to stay active and healthy, both for older adults and their caregivers. You can access both guides here: https://socialsupportsnb.ca/en/

Meet the Caregiver: "Hi my name is Melissa Beal Wheaton, What I love about being a Personal Support Worker is being able to make a difference in my clients lives. For them to be able to live independently at home, within the comforts of a place they have called home for so long. I devote my time and dedication to my clients making sure they are happy, healthy and properly cared for. I love sitting down with my clients and listening to their stories. They are always so funny and interesting. Last but not not least I love the appreciation you get from your clients but also Kindred Home Care. They know how hard the job can be and are always there to guide us and offer support in any way they can. It makes all the difference in the world when you know that you are appreciated."

Meet the Caregiver: "Hi my name is Lilly Fletcher. Working as a caregiver is a very rewarding experience. As a UNB Psychology student I have always been passionate about helping others in living a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically. Seeing people maintain their independence at home not only puts a smile on my client’s faces, but mine as well! Whether it’s helping with everyday tasks, running errands, or in some cases learning how to make homemade bread - I always look forward to the day ahead. We believe that high-quality home care should be more widely available to seniors, helping them stay happy and comfortable in their own homes for as long as possible. As highlighted in this article, when more seniors are able to age in the place of their choice, it’s a win-win for our health-care system and society.

Last month, our amazing team welcomed 19 new clients and helped them stay safe, comfortable and home for the holidays. Two of these new clients were discharged from hospital: one of whom was in palliative care and wanted to be back home during his final days. Our dedicated caregivers stepped up to be there, during an especially busy time of year. We knew these clients urgently needed home support and our caregivers rose to the occasion without batting an eye. Families, social workers and Extra Mural discharge planners were all extremely grateful. We owe it all to our great team. Meghan Riley-Leavitt, Director of Home Care for Kindred. Thank you to our caregivers for always helping us go the extra mile!

As part of our commitment to being an anti-racist organization https://kindredhomecare.com/kindred-home-care-joins-the-fi/ our leadership team attended a virtual workshop, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace by LifeWorks. Afterward, we asked our team for the biggest takeaways from the training here are a few responses: I was grateful for the time to reflect on some of my own biases and socialized racial stereotyping. This type of awareness building is neede...d and valuable to us all. My BIG question for today, tomorrow and the next day: ‘How can we all continue to move from bystander to ally?’ This training has helped me focus on more recruitment and retainment opportunities for people of colour and minority groups. Language around racism is something I think we can all learn more about. Kindred is wholeheartedly creating an environment where all of our employees and clients know they’re valued, respected and safe. While we don’t have all of the answers, we know that individually and as a company, we can do more to educate ourselves. We’re committed to learning and being a force of positive change.

For over 30 years, Kindred Home Care has been providing quality family support services in the form of mentoring, parent aid, drop-ins, and support to children, adults, and families with special needs. We are not just a home care company! Meet one of our Family Support Workers, Yvonne, who will tell you a bit about what she does and why she loves it. "Hi my name is Yvonne! I’ve been a family support worker now for 20+ years with Kindred Home Care. I do a lot of parent-aid fo...r young or inexperienced parents. The reason I do this job is to help people get a better understanding of how to raise their children to become successful adults. Sometimes we have to adapt our parenting styles to help children handle what life throws at them. I want to give parents the tools to help their children with problem-solving, responsibility, and accountability. These are skills that children can use their entire life. To sum it up, I find this career extremely rewarding in a lot of ways. We have our bad days, and we have our good days, but when you see a child grow up to be a successful adult like I have, it makes it all worth it." Like fighting an addiction, being an antiracist requires persistent self-awareness, constant self-criticism, and regular self-examination. This is a quote from Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist. It’s a book we’re reading as Kindred Home Care commits to being an anti-racist organization. Read about the actions we’re taking in our new blog post: https://kindredhomecare.com/kindred-home-care-joins-the-fi/. We know it takes work, and we’re dedicated to learning every day.
