ZOOM - Annual General Meeting January 13th

When I was 14, I started helping my mom and dad in the home craft section of the Kingston Fall Fair. That was a couple decades ago, and here we are. Although my dad is no longer with us, my mom, sisters, and their families, myself and my family are all very much still involved in the Fair. My mom and I would walk for the next 5 days all over the grounds, assisting in making final touches perfect, welcoming young students off buses, running water, food, etc to entertainment, b...eing at the ground from early morning until late at night. This was what we waited for and planned for since October 1st of the previous year!! Every monthly meeting with our Fair Board, every Vendor or entertainment contract that was discussed, all the volunteer hours into making this fair better then last and preparing for September when the fair would open! But not this year In March we decided it is in the best interest of our members to postpone our monthly meetings until it was safe however, by May the best decision for the 2020 fair and all its participants was to cancel it. This year is the 190th year for the Kingston Fall Fair and the decision was not taken lightly. We had big ideas, new entertainment, new shows, new members, new and exciting vendors, it was sad. Today would mark the first day of insanity, horse trailers driving in, vendors would be setting up, competition entries arriving, and all the members would run around laughing and crying trying to finalize details, find someone or something, before the gates opened in 24 hours. It is crazy, and every year we do it again. So today as I reflect on what the past 25+ years the Kingston Fall Fair has meant to me, I am sad and miss the craziness. I miss the laughter and seeing all the familiar faces, I miss the excitement of the competitions, the colouring contest and all the children smiling about corn on the cob on education day. I miss the running around... and halfway through the weekend saying, This is my last year and then at the end being sad it is over. I miss the community coming together, and the normalcy that once was, before COVID. I miss the quality time and days spent with my mom, those moments I cherish beyond the Ferris wheel lights. Honestly, I don’t know what the future holds for our fall fair but, I do know that I received an email to resume socially distanced masked meetings in October in preparations for September 2021 and that was exciting! The Kingston and District Agricultural Society is proud to offer a $500 bursary to a Frontenac County High School Graduate who will be entering their FIRST YEAR of post-secondary education in their chosen field within the agri-food industry. This year we would like to congratulate Kaitlin! ... Kaitlin will be attending Lakeland College in Alberta this coming fall with a focus in Animal Science Technology. Her time spent locally with the 4H club, Agricultural Fairs and a family history of farming has helped guide Kaitlin towards her future goals of one day working at the Joyceville Prison farms. We would like to wish Kaitlin success in her first year at college! Congratulations!

Happy Canada Day! It’s not the the one we’re used to, but we can all agree, this is the place we live, the place we love, and the place we all want to be!

The Kingston and District Agricultural Society is offering a $500 bursary to a Frontenac County High School Graduate who will be entering their FIRST YEAR of post-secondary education in their chosen field within the agri-food industry. To qualify for this bursary, a student must be accepted into a post secondary institution (college or university) program in fall of 2020, (FIRST YEAR STUDENTS ONLY) that could include any of these disciplines: agriculture, food, nutrition, cul...inary arts, agricultural commerce or marketing, veterinary, horticulture or food service. Application deadline August 1st, 2020.
