Our first play comes to you from Sean Meldrum - "Tourist Town" Shortwave Postcard Plays Project Presented in partnership between the City’s Cultural Services Department, Grand OnStage, CFRC Radio 101.9, Shortwave Theatre Festival and Cellar Door Project. Keenah brings a postcard over to Whever. ... Keenah: Look, you, we got a postcard from the city! Whever: Eh? Who do we know in Toronto these days? Keenah: Not Toronto, you, it's a postcard from the city! Whever: Eh? Keenah shows Whever the front of the postcard depicting well known Kingston landmarks. Keenah: It's from Kingston Cultural Services, see! Oh, look at City Hall! How marvelous. And Murney Tower too! Look, you, look! Whever: Yes, I look, I see! Okay. So it's Kingston. Listen, the recycling's pretty full over there. You might have to make some room. Keenah: Oh, just look at our little Kingston! And on a postcard no less! How magical! Whever: Magical? It's... Keenah, who cares about a postcard from where you are? From where you live! Keenah: I think it's nice! Aren't you happy to know you live somewhere worth putting on a postcard? Whever: Keenah, I could take a picture of my nose for you. Writing some words on the back of it don't make my schnoz a wonder of the world now. Keenah honks Whever's nose gently Keenah: Honk! Don't say such things about your nosey schnoz! (Keenah looks again at the postcard.) Ooo, and look at Fort Henry, Whev! Look, Whev, it's Fort Henry! Whever: Yes I know it's Fort Henry! I see it, Fort Henry. I see it regularly. And I don't need a postcard to do it! I'll get in the car right now and show you Fort Henry! Heck, I'll show you all these sights in fifteen minutes flat! Keenah: Oh... What a lovely idea, Whev! We'll go backyard sight-seeing! I'll pack us a picnic! Whever: Hey now whoa, we're not actually going sightseeing. I was just making a point. Keenah: You don't want to go? Whever: Why go see the sights if they're sights you always see? Keenah: I don't know. To focus on them for once, without the distraction of being on your way to somewhere else! To take a breath and appreciate all the history we live around! Whever: Oh. Please, Keens. Don't start with Kingston and its capital-H History! It's been here a while, things happened, some old stuff is still here, great, good. Honestly, as soon as you've existed around something for more than a year, it ceases to be special. End of story! Pause. Whever realizes what he's said and looks at Keenah guiltily Keenah is upset but tries not to show it. Whever: Hey, I didn't mean that, Keens. ( Whever glances again at the postcard.) It's not that I don't think Kingston is special. I do. It's just... I know it. It's where I live, it's already part of... what I do and... who I am... and... Hm. ( Pause. Keenah looks at him.) I guess... that actually makes it more special, now that I think about it... I guess. Pause. Keenah gives him a hug. Keenah: I'll get the picnic basket. The end.

Grand OnStage is pleased to present Montreal’s groundbreaking circus collective, The 7 Fingers. Out of Order will air on Thursday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. Register for this FREE Virtual event Now https://bit.ly/3fILnQd In September 2020, against all odds, The 7 Fingers embarked on a new adventure. Taking into account our collective health while quenching our desire to create and collaborate, we gathered colleagues, artists and designers to create a show that embraces social d...istancing and other COVID-imposed measures. With the support of CALQ and of La Tohu, we created Out of Order. When Montreal became a red zone, Out of Order lost the opportunity to meet its audience. Rather than letting the show disappear before it came to life, it was transformed into a film. Out of Order is not simply a digital recording of a show but a cinematographic work in its own right. The City of Kingston is seeking applications from local artists and collectives working in varying performing arts disciplines for its new Grand Theatre Local Arts Residency program. Through the residency, participants are encouraged to explore new ideas, create, self-direct their research and time, and nurture new directions in their work. The... deadline to apply is Friday, April 23, 2021. The residency was created in response to the impact of COVID-19 on the performing arts and in support of recovery and resiliency of the local arts sector. The program will provide Kingston-based artists with the opportunity to explore, innovate, create, and present new work and will contribute to Kingston’s continued cultural vibrancy, vitality, and sense of community. In addition to the Local Arts Residency program, the Grand Theatre has continued to support and present the performing arts through rentals of the Baby Grand black-box theatre for small, maximum 20-person audience performances, through the Virtual Grand OnStage presenting program and artist talks, and engagement initiatives. The Regina Rosen has remained closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Residency is the first initiative to animate the space since the closure on March 13, 2020.

Today would have been Leonard Cohen’s birthday. The Grand OnStage program has featured the works of Leonard Cohen in a variety of performance formats over the years. Whether it be through the haunting vocal stylings of Patricia O’Callaghan in October 2017 or the sold out performance of Dance Me, by Les Ballets Jazz des Montreal in March 2020, each performance culminated in rapturous applause and effusive adoration for the life and career of Leonard Cohen.
