Today I finished my #hennessymyway entry! Eaux-De-Vie Sidecar With a new leaf turning, and the year of the rat behind us, I wanted to pay homage to the collabor...ative work between Zhang Huan and Maison Hennessy. In the recent year of the rat, Zhang Huan created his piece Eaux-De-Vie, in collaboration with Maison Hennessy, for the purpose of creating a decorative decanter. In this piece he used the lucky colour of red; which represents good fortune, joy, and happiness; as well as the lucky colours of the rat blue, gold, and green. His piece depicts a celebration of a new zodiac cycle, and the lively nature of the Hennessy VSOP Eaux-de-Vie. In my presentation of the Eaux-De-Vie Sidecar, I wanted to show inspiration from Eaux-De-Vie; but in a new year, the year of the ox. In my presentation, you see the use of bubbles as a nod to Zhang Huan, his artwork, and his notion of illustrating eau de vie cells. The cocktail is presented on a silver tray, covered in red powder, on a white bar, with a blue halo to represent the lucky colours of the ox and the new year. The cocktail itself, is the skeleton of a sidecar, using traditional Chinese ingredients as representative to the story of the ox and its agricultural role, and created in a lucky blue shirt. The Eaux-De-Vie Sidecar is dressed in a red powder consisting of goji berries and sugar; uses a traditional 5-Spice blend (Szechuan peppercorn, fennel seeds, anise, cinnamon) infused into an Orange Liqueur; Yuzu, which is native to china although commonly grown in Japan; Pink Himalayan Saline; and of course, Hennessy VSOP. Much like Zhang Huan’s artwork, this cocktail is an ode to life, and a blessing to the new year.
