[Virtual K-Culture #79] Performing Arts Series #14 - Seoul Gayageum Ensemble - The Labyrinth Seoul Gayageum Ensemble consists of musicians studying for a master’s degree at College of Music, Seoul National University. It has continued its musical exploration since its establishment in September, 2016. The ensemble seeks various paths for musical growth of its members by searching into academic and profound aspects of music such as unconventional beats, complex rhythms, atonal... scales and other contemporary music techniques, and performs a diversity of musical works which has not received public recognition. [VKC#78] As the 8th Visual Art Series of the Virtual K-Culture program, the Korean Cultural Centre presents Artists In Their Times: Korean Modern and Contemporary Art exhibition created by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (MMCA). This large-scale permanent exhibition featuring the major pieces of the MMCA collection examines major currents of Korean modern and contemporary art. Approaching the course of Korean art not only from the art world itself,... but from a periodic and social viewpoints intends to overview the atmosphere and the development of the history surrounding the featured works by providing viewers with an opportunity to understand the background from which the works were created. The 15-section exhibition delineating some 120 years of Korean modern and contemporary art history is comprised of 300 works by 250 artists. This exhibition is organized by a collaboration with the researchers specializing in each historical art movement. [Virtual K-Culture #77] Performing Arts Series #13- GUGAKNORI - The Wind Blows [GUGAKNORI] GUGAKNORI taps into Koreans’ primal instincts. The team’s title shows the spirit of "Let's play with Gugak." Its music expresses han and heung, uniquely Korean sentiments which could roughly be understood as sorrows and delights, respectively. The haegeum sings on pathos and fanatical sorrow, the geomungo conveys passion and serenity, the vocalist Morae expresses delight and longing, Pu...ngmul drums play out Korea’s scenery and joy, while the guitar of Pete Jeong portraying dances with embellishments and laments. All of these elements are intertwined to express Korea’s deep sensitivities. [Virtual K-Culture #76] K-Food Webtoon Series The 13th episode of K-Food Webtoon Series is Dakkalguksu! Today, we would like to introduce Dakkalguksu, it’s an energy boosting dish with a rich broth and chewy noodles. Among many other kalguksu, Dak (chicken)-kalguksu, Myeolchi (anchovy)-kalguksu, and Sagol (beef broth)-kalguksuare the typical types of kalguksu. Dak-kalguksu is particularly popular for the K-pop fans after BTS mentioned Dak-kalguksu as a Korean chicken noodle s...oup in their song. The KCC launched the K-Food Webtoon series last April to introduce Korean food and recipes to provide an opportunity to learn to cook and try Korean food from home. We hope you enjoy these recipes and continue to experience Korean culture at home. Sunmin Han worked as the head chef at the Korean Ambassador’s residence in Canada. She graduated from the International Cooking College in Korea, has a certificate from the Institute of Korean Traditional Food, and worked as the head chef at the Korean Embassy in Indonesia. [Virtual K-Culture #75] Performing Arts Series #12 - [Gugak in] Sori-ensemble GONG - Wonderful Maehwa Flowers! Sori-ensemble GONG consists of five vocalists and one composer, all of whom studied at Korea National University of Arts. Each of the five singers specializes in different genre of Korean traditional music including pansori, gyeonggi folksong and gayageum byeong-chang (meaning singing while playing the gayageum). Although one circle has no special meaning, two cir...cles put together () signify an infinity. Sori-ensemble GONG, as its name implies, sings to explore infinite possibilities of musical communion with the world.
