Kintsugi, also known as kintsukuroi, is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the cracks with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, creating beautiful metallic lines throughout the pottery piece. This art is thought to have originated when Japanese shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa sent a damaged Chinese tea bowl back to China for repairs in the late 15th century. When it was returned, it had been repaired with ugly metal staples. This eve...nt may have prompted Japanese craftsmen to look for a more aesthetic way to repair pottery. As a philosophy, kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise built on the idea that in embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create an even stronger, more beautiful piece of art. It was very interesting to see the different perspectives and learning approaches at school as well as the difference in culture in every aspect of my time there. Getting to travel Europe for a month was ...an amazing adventure and I can’t wait to go back. I am very glad I took the opportunity to study a semester in a different continent affording me the ability to learn more about the world. The entire experience is one I will never forget. Today we will be talking about a Swedish tradition, Lucia! The Lucia celebration usually takes place early in the morning in a church. There is a procession involving a girl with a wreath of candles in her hair, followed by an entourage of girls, with candles in their hands, and boys that hold a star on a stick. Everyone is dressed in white gowns with red sashes and sings Christmas songs for the audience. St Lucia's Day first became widely celebrated in Sw...eden in the late 1700s. The feast day is on the 13th of December, and this day was also known as the darkest night in Sweden according to the old almanac. The story told is that St Lucia would secretly bring food to the persecuted Christians in Rome, who lived in hiding in the catacombs under the city. She would wear candles on her head so she had both her hands free to carry things.
